Tournament rifle

Hello all,

I have been a coyote hunter for a long time but I have recently started hunting calling tournaments and I am looking to build an "out west tournament rifle". I already have a Savage 116 in 22-250 which is and excellent shooter. I am thinking about rebarreling to something like at 22-6mm or 22-243 and maybe AI beyond that. I am looking for FLAT and hard hitting. This would be a "walking/calling"rifle so weight is a factor as is barrel length. This rifle will not ever see a PD town as it will be a "dedicated" rifle.

These are some of the calibers that many of the top tournament contenders are using to cope with the wind out west as well as being able to hold "on fur" way out there but I know nothing of these choices ballistically. Some fellas are shooting 69gr matchkings at 3700fps( or so they say) and while it does tear up hides(cant keep them in tournament hunting anyway), not many get away alive. I am guessing barrel life will suffer but otherwise, I have no idea what to expect or what is possible in terms of inherent accuracy, load data or anything else.

I will also consider any other caliber options that any of you might have but as per contest rules, it MUST BE .24 CAL OR SMALLER.

Maybe just keep the .22-250 and practice my holdovers? AI it?

Or maybe 6x284( is this a long action case?)
Anything else fast, flat and naturally accurate?

Does a guy just order up an aftermarket barrel(Shilen, Douglas..ect..ect and screw it on and go?

Sorry to bombard with questions and thank you for your patience. I appreciate it a great deal.

This question would be better off in the "factory/Hybrid" forum. However, you could probably call Shilen barrels and get good advise. They produce ready-to-go, premium barrels for Savage actions at very reasonable prices.

For a walking rig I like the mid-weight 6mms 80-90grs. I think their the best comprimize between Vel and BC. A 24"-25" LV contour barrel, in a light synthetic stock (NOT TUPPERWARE). Caliber choice well (in no particular order) 6xc,6x47L ,6-250 ,243, 6 BR etc. or any of the AI versions thereof will give you as much or more case capacity than you'll need for that barrel length. Shooting in that style of tourney I wouldn't be too worried about cooking a barrel ....... Good to hear from you,Been awhile

Don't know the field, just some wild ideas...

Something like this:

in 6 BR stuff or the various 6BR improved. Lots of good information out there for them.

243 or 6mm Remington or their AI variant might be a good idea.

Back in the day, I had very good look with the Sierra 85 gr HPBT GameKing on groundhogs. I've shot a couple of coyotes with it and they were anchored.
