So this year I got into rimfire benchrest. I bought an old 10.5 pound class Remington 40X and was loaned a front rest. The stock was a factory stock and I needed to fight to keep it upright. I looked into getting a BR stock, but did not want to spend the money, having gotten myself on a slippery slope with a new scope, new rest, a Sporter class rifle, flags and ammo. I decided to try and "fix" my problem myself. The Sporter class rifle I am getting has a flat front end about 2.5" wide and my Remington 40X, flattened out would be about the same.
I Put the stock upside down on the radial arm saw platform and with a dado blade, flattened out the front part of the forend. It looks like it will work just fine. The square edge where the stock steps down acts against the rest as a stop. With the rest level, I found my scope was not trued up, so I got that twisted a bit until the lines are up and down and side to side level.
