244-40x

hi guys, i was starting to have a tough time getting those nice groups out of my 40x so i went to visit ron smith up here in alberta. we ran a bore scope down her and around the throat and the beginning of the lands there is a bunch of little cracks and looks like some pitting. i bought the rifle second hand and still has the original barrel on it, chambered 244, ser# 18XXX. It looked like it had never been cleaned before i bought it. I guess she's over the hill. I left it with him, he talked me into 24" gain to 9 (from 27" 1-12). I wasn't going to question him, he's made more barrels than i'll ever see. But do you think there will be any advantages?? (other than being able to shoot heavier leads) just wondering?? thanks for the input.

.244 Why?

Is there any reason you are fond of the .244 cartridge? If I were going to rebarrel, I would start with a 6mm cartridge that was capable of accuracy, without burning up the throat. You will get better accuracy and longer barrel life from a 6BR. I assume your 40x is a single shot so feeding from a mag is a non issue. Brass is available from Lapua, and is incredibly consistent. With the fast twist barrel, you could shoot anything from 58 gr vmax to 105 bergers with amazing results. I have 2 6BR`s one is a 40x. Neither are finicky on the reloading, and use about half the powder of the 244. just my 2 cents.

thanks for the reply jeff. you are probably right as far as going with the 6br. but funds are and issue and i figure i got all the dies, brass and such for the 244 that i'd just stick with it. maybe a bad excuse but it's all i got for now...

If portability isn't an issue........

I'd go w/the 26" barrel. As far as the 9" twist, unless you're going to shoot the heavier, longer bullets, that'll be a good one. I guess, based on the old twist, that it was a varminter, I too have a 40X w/the 12" twist, wish there'd been something like the web, & a place like BC, before I ordered that, even though I love that cartridge........:D Old habits die hard.;)

Call Ron back and have him rifle that barrel to finish at between 7.5 and 8 inch twist. There is no reason not to use a twist fast enough to stabilize the 107's if you are going with a twist faster than 12. Nine won't quite do it. Regards, Bill.
