Three Groove Barrel

A feller made the claim that three groove barrels are preferred by bechrest & varmint shooters over four groove barrels for accuracy. Is this true?

The fact that he made the claim may be true...

... but I think it stops there. The number of grooves is not what makes the barrel accurate.

3 groove barrels

I have two three groove barrels. One is chambered in .243 A.I. .270 neck and the other is .308 .337 neck. The only thing I noticed with three grooves is that they clean easier. I don't see any increase in accuracy and I shoot alot.

No.... Not exactly.............. Truth be told... NBRSA/IBS registerd shoots are DOMINATED by 4 groove and 6 groove barrels............ Ya see LOTSA Krieger 4 groove cut rifled barrels winning A LOT..! Ya see 4 groove Bartlein cut rifled barrels winning more and more............... Ya see a good representation of 6 groove button rifled Hart and Shilen barrels winning........

The custom highend barrels today are DAMN fine..! Competition has made this true. Some of the High Power shooters I know swear by 2 groove 30 cal barrels as do some .22 rimfire BR shooters....

It's ALL in the quality of the maker...... Yes, the wider lands of 4,3,2 groove may lend to a "bit" longer throat life but I'm not real sure.

Don't get to worried about land quantity. Depend on the Quality of the barrel makers talked about on this forum and you'll be in tall cotton.

We have used quite a few Lilja 3-groove, 6mm barrels. They sure seem to break-in very easy.

I'd take a really good three groove over a not so good "xx" groove any day.

Of course I would say the same thing regardles of how many grooves either of them has.

Thanks for the response, guys. I'd never heard anything special about 3 groovers, but I haven't heard it all either
