threading and truing rimfire pressfit action

What is the process of truing up an action, id like to tinker with a marlin rimfire action. Do I insert a tight fitting precision bar into the boltway and then indicate that in or just indicate off of the female tennon for the barrel? Thanks guys, always learning.

I'd use a snug fitting mandrel.

To do it right you are going to need a snug fitting mandrel to allow you to turn in place a tight fitting external bushing on the front rec ring. Then place the steady rest on the newly turned front bushing and slide the mandrell out the back enough to allow you to thread the front rec ring.
