Thinking rail guns

Apart from Magnum metal, Jay Young and RFD who else is making rail guns or is that about it. Before spending any money I want to do my research on the pros and cons of each type available.

Rail guns

Tom Libby set a nat`l record with a Skip Otto designed/built gun.It incorporates a sleeved liquid filled barrel housing....

I think Greg Kinsler in Washington State is still building them. His are very similar to Jay Young's
Rails. Don't know his # but you could probably get in touch with Rick Grahm, he could probably supply you with contact info. Also not sure but, I don't think RFD is making rails anymore.

If it was me, I'd buy one from one of the advertisers on this forum. I'm new to Rail gun ownership. I'm thinking that choice of action and barrels are more important than platform.

Function is more important than form in these things. Just my opinion.

If I were you, I would buy a Young, and have a barrel block and sleeve made like Ocock's He has shot several agg. records with it in the last few years. There is a reason why so many of those rails. They work. This is not to say that others don't do as well, but obviously his works very well.
Here is a picture of Gary's rail. This one shows an earlier action. Currently it has a Marsh Saguaro.

,and here is the Otto design. I believe that this one is Tom Libby's.

Glenn,
Your correct that one should try to utilize the vendors that advertise here, and the platform is very important, because of the way some rails react to recoil, Bob Dodd's had a smaller footprint and I can remember a number of people that had complaints that the base was moving when the rail was recoiling as it hit its stop.
I think that Jay Young builds one hell of a platform but you need to consider the wait for one of his rails! I had a Jay Young rail I bought used and had to sell it when the economy turned south, but it was top notch all the way. Greg Kinsler started out with his own concept based on shooting at his home range in Tacoma which is up hill, so he added a spring system that automatically returned the rail to battery, but had some peculiar reactions. he also was milling a v grove into the bottom of the upper rail which if it was ever damaged you couldn,t repair it. Greg resolved those issues and was making one that looks and functions the same as a Jay Young rail. Bob Woodard has one and the machining is first class. Yes the action and barrel are also important and Bat makes an action that is pretty cool once loaded you lay another round on the top of the action and when you open the bolt the spent casing is ejected and the other round drops into place and you just close the bolt and lay another round on top. I can't speak to the Magnum Metal rails as I don't recall seeing or shooting next to one, my current rail is a Hasecuster, and shoots extremely well.

it is actually Craig Kensler and his boss has stepped in and wants a ton of money for a rail with scope (over 10g) so they are not making them any more, he only made about 1/2 dozen or so and I had 2 young clones and 3 Dixon clones. nice but pricey stick to jay young, there was one for sale recently here for a good price and nice rail

Thanks for the correction, I know that where he worked if they were slow his boss gave him permission to build them but I have not been up to their shoot for a couple of years , so I wasn't aware that his boss shut that down. Thats good advice to look for a used rail. Do you happen to know what the wait is currently for a new Jay Young Rail? I know when I put mine up for sale it sold in 15 minutes!!I was astounded never sold anything that quick in my life!

Magnum metal

G.Vanlier,

I can Speak a little about the Guy that makes the Magnum metal Rail Gun. His name is Scott Hunter. He is the Gulf Coast Region Director. He’s stationed up at Wichita Falls,Tx.

You see a lot of his Rails down here in the Gulf Coast region. A handsome piece of work. Scott fixed a tracking issue on my rail. that I bought used. When I got it back, from Scott. I shot it in a 10 shot unl registered match at Denton,Tx. The first group at 100yds was a .166. He obviously fixed the tracking problem. A problem that was not attributable to the original builder.

Andy Cross, while you,re doing research I would suggest that you contact Scott, his number is listed on the forum. He has hands on experience with Rail gun design, function.

BTW..... When it comes to World Records shot with Rail Guns,I credit the Shooter. Gary O’Cock is one of the Legends in this Sport. I never met him but I bet he could shoot my Rail gun better than I do and its not a Jay Young.

Just a thought.
