The springer bench rest gauntlet has been thrown down

A score of 702 points out of 750 was achieved this past Saturday at the monthly Phoenix, Arizona Air Rifle Bench Rest competition. Moreover, it was done with a current production Walther LGV.

I've heard from a reliable source that the guy who did it is more Johnny-come-lately than all around air gunner. He's talked about the luck involved in getting the score. He's shared how he relies on a specially made wind indicator since he can't read the wind all that well. Can you believe that, according to a trusted source, regular wind flags just confuse him?

Not only does he weight sort his pellets, but he also sub-sorts them by pellet head diameter. He's tricked out his rifle with a bench rest adapter because he has been unable to master the artillery hold. He's even added an after market trigger because the standard trigger break was not good enough for him. What's next?

Is he going to hire some kid to cock the rifle for him during a match? Will he find someone else to select his pellets and insert them into the breech? Perhaps, he'll find an exotic coating for his barrel in the hope of getting some other untoward advantage. Can we let this guy run roughshod over the traditional spring gun minute of milk jug precision that some, but not all, have come to accept? Is his lucky one time achievement to be envied or surpassed?

Aren't there any number of spring piston aficionados that can beat his score and do so by a significant amount. Will any of them take up the challenge presented by a spring piston score of 702, and if so, when?

A spring piston score of 702 by an upstart must not stand! He must be taken down! His facade of competency needs to be utterly destroyed! Put this Johnny-come-lately in his place! Let us all watch him crumble! Beat his score and show the entire air rifle community that his score was no more than a lucky fluke.

The next opportunity to exceed a competition score of 702 here in Phoenix will be Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the Rio Salado Sportsmen's Club located just east of Mesa, Arizona.

Fortunately, there is no need to come to Phoenix to soundly thrash the upstart. Rather, find a local air rifle bench rest club near you. Shoot a springer in their next competition (even if you have to go up against PCP technology), beat 702 points, and share your score here on-line for the world to see.

Bill,

Those conditions in the video make me think of our 2011 conditions at the Worlds - and how much nicer it would have been to have had the challenge of driving through the snow to get to the range rather than being able to fry and egg on the truck's hood once at the range.

Thanks for the post!

Dave
