This weekend at Ben Avery we held the third (LV) and fourth (HV) legs of the Arizona State Benchrest Championships - full match results will be posted in a couple of days.
Of particular importance was our competition for the coveted "Ocock Trophy". After the 5th target on Sunday all shooters participated in a special contest. The trophy's namesake (Gary "The Oozer" Ocock) had selected a very unique challenge to test each shooters abilities. Specifically, Gary hung Easter eggs from twine attached to the backer cable at 200 yards. The backer motor was engaged and each shooter was given one shot to hit an egg in motion at 200 yards
To make matters even more challenging, Gary required each shooter to use his front rest and rear bag for their shot. If you did not know, Gary is a "bag squeezer" from long ago and his equipment should already be in a museum - after disinfection
Here are some photos that memorialize the event.
Gary works with his intrepid target crew to hang the eggs.
Chuck Miller, Lester Bruno, Bob Brackney, Kent Webster (new shooter) and Randy Burgess wait for thier turn at the egg shoot under the watchful eye of The Oozer.
Walt Berger shoots at a moving egg while Don Neilson waits his turn.
Now remember these eggs are hanging at 200 yards, moving with the backer cable and reacting to a very switchy 10+ mph wind.
Lou Murdica takes his turn.
Ed Maxwell gives it the old college try.
Although the target crew thought we were nuts trying to hit these moving eggs at 200 yards, every shooter gave it his best. Two Hall of Fame shooters participated in the event. Amazingly, both Chuck Miller and Bob Brackney hit one of the moving eggs. In a shoot off, Bob Brackney prevailed hitting another egg.
Here is the maestro himself presenting the coveted "Ocock Trophy" (an Easter basket with a small remuneration) to the victorious Bob Brackney.
As I said in the begining, the full match results will be posted in a couple of days.
