Would like to ask about all these custom barrels thats being used,2 groove,6 groove tight bore 17 twist , 2 groove reverse taper on and on .My old factory barrel seems to be holding up pretty well for now but was considing a custom barrel .Are the custom barrels worth the cost or should I just have my old barrel rechambered and crowned Thanks to all on your insight

It really depends on how accurate you want your rifle to be. There are some factory barrels that can shoot with the best of the customs, but not many.

If you are happy with the level of accuracy of your factory barrel, then it would be a waste. The money would be better spent buying quality ammo and practicing.

Hopefully, you will get some more feed back to help you make your deceision.

The barrels being made today are by far the best ever. I have not seen any factory barrels at the top of the leaderboard of any large match. In my opinion the top 2 barrels right now are Shilen and Broughton. Shilen, go with the 4 groove ratchet and whatever taper you want. Broughton, go with the 5c. Most people now are shooting a .900 straight barrel. If your action needs a bigger barrel, then go with the #7 taper.

Hope this helps

Factory vs Custom

Paul:
Like Dan said, there is a huge difference in the barrels today vs the old Factory barrels. Although Winchester and Remington had some fantastic barrels back in their day, you would be better served with a custom if you do anything. For one, you can't be sure, that when re chambering, you improve the barrel. I've seen case when a great barrel would go south after re chambering. Re crowning usually helps, but it isn't the total answer. If you are shooting Irons, you need to keep the longer sight radius. Therefore I too would look into the Shilen Ratchet or the Broughton 5C, and get them to make it to finish between 27-28 inches. They can even duplicate your present profile as well. Glad to see you're still active.

Dan,
The Feinwerkebau factory barrels out there at the moment are as good as any custom barrel. DJ had a go of one in Italy and said it shoots as good as anything he owns. I don't own one, but have had my butt kicked a few times by them.

Peter: Those Feinwerkebau barrels -or guns cost out the yang but I do agree with your opinion about them. I just wish I could afford one. the Walther rifles have Feinwerkbau barrel do they not. garrisone.

Garrisone
Down here a Feinwerkebau is in the same sort of price range as an Anschutz. Don't know who makes the barrels for who over there, it changes from time to time. But Walthers aren’t shooting like Feinwerkebaus.
