I realize that is a loaded question, but now we have a candidate for the best pellets, How about some ideas on the top 3 air rifles, in your opinion of course, but for the guys that only know rimfire , we need a start. And of course it is regardless of cost of the unit. Is there a single gunsmith that is building air rifles, like the rimfire gunsmiths?

USFT
Theoban

Craig,
For 25 meter accuracy, anything except Feinwerbau P70 (Field Target). Those are reserved for northwest shooters as they're accurate right out of the box and we don't want to mess with multiple barrels, cleaners or lubes. Suggest Theoban with gunsmith customizing. For pellets I suggest JSB but only after washing in Dove dish soap, baking at 200 degrees for 15 minutes and finally blow drying the insides of the skirts. Then for lubricity, place them in a line skirt down and lighly spray with PAM olive oil (with butter). Shoot at least 12 through the barrel to thoroughly moisten the lands and grooves. Finally, know this is all tongue in cheek as testing different brands, sizes and weights is all part of the fun.

Probably the least experienced opinion you will receive but strongly consider the USFT with a custom .22 caliber barrel.

Not an "out of the box" air rifle capable of benchrest accuracy but easy to tinker with for us benchrest types and loads of things to try for those seeking the "holy grail". My first air rifle, more than capable of a 250 and to quote someone much smarter than I, "everything has been changed except the paint." No regulator issues, lots of air, the best barrel support and a trigger that can be modified to benchrest standards. Last but not least, it can move from 20 FPE to 30+ FPE quite easily for those Open/Unlimited shooters that want to test the outer limits. Mine likes 20 FPE and she will stay right there.

Sorry, almost for got to mention this. While the finest rimfire gunsmith on the planet does not believe it works for rimfire barrels, the USFT makes barrel indexing a breeze. See some anecdotal results under Notes from the Bench at usairriflebenchrest.com.

3 Best

12 ft.lb. EV2 very little modifications and ready to go .
20 ft.lb. Dawson with good barrel ( all custom built ) .
I wish I had picked up the P70 that I could have a few years ago .

I will make seven, Walther LG 300 Dominator, FT or HP units but prior to the current items being offer by Umarex. Deadly accurate out of the box with 10gr jsb or air arms round nose .452mm dia.. My USFT #219 has not even come close to it yet.

I really appreciate the info, looking into all possibilities , Air might be the future as far as cost for sure. We got a good discussion on air rifles that is good. See you at the Worlds.

MHopkins, I almost forgot, can that Pam be a store brand or does it have to be a name brand?

Either, as long as it has a red cap. Cannot contain margarine, however. Must be true butter mist.
