The .243 and Barnes 85 grain Triple Shocks (TSX).
After numerous trips to the rifle range and 56 expensive TSX’s down the barrel, out of desperation I made a discovery!
But first more information: The rifle is a Remington 700 sporter made back when Mike Walker was running things at Remington. I bought this rifle at a gun show more than 10 years ago, but had never shot it. Being that it had been a very long time since trying to get a factory barreled rifle to shoot I was apprehensive. As luck would have it I met an aspiring gunsmith right here on these pages and he only lived several miles away.
The first thing we did was to bore scope the barrel and found it a little rough, but the throat look great and all the rifling was there! In a short period of time the rifle was pillar bedded and had an impressive new crown. A Leupold 1.75X6 scope was mounted the rifle was ready.
While all this was happening I ordered some Final Finish Bullets from Superior Shooting Systems. Note: This is not the first barrel I have fired lapped.
After fire lapping a load for the Nosler 95 grain Partitions was work up with good results.
Now I needed a rifle to shoot unleaded bullets, so a box of 85 grain TSX’s were ordered.
Now the short part: After many trips to the rifle range and trying several different powders the TSX’s still were not shooting any better than one and a half inches at 100 yards with IMR-4350 giving the best groups and velocities. Another box of bullets was ordered
So out of desperation I loaded three rounds each of the same weight of powder; however each set of rounds I seated the bullets 0.050, 0.075 and 0.100 off the lands.
The first three shots were over an inch. The second three shots were less than an inch. The last three shots seated 0.100 off the lands were very very small.
One hundred thousands off the lands and shooting tiny groups............WILD!
Yes we will make final scope adjustments and be back at the range next week.
IMR-4350, Lapua brass, GM210M (New Box), Lee Collet Dies, Forester BR Seating Die.
