Test indicator for indicating a barrel

What type of dial test indicator is best for indicating a barrel in the lathe? I remember an old post about this subject but I could not find it. The indicators with a long point only read .0005”. If I remember the old post, Jackie Schmidt put a ruffling hole in the barrel and then put a Mitutoyo test indicator in the hole so he could get a reading at the throat.

I have found the easiest way to to use one of the 3 long piloted rods PTG sell... the piloted end up in the throat area... the other end in the tail stock... and any indicator that measures 10 thou... I hang a 2 ounce weight an inch from the chamber... indicate next to the chamber.

Sort of depends on how you want to do it.

Another way, not bench rest approved. Works for my minute of buffalo 458's and pig punching 30 calibers.

Thanks for these pictures, I really like the way you have the rod inserted on the outboard spider and as soon as I get a chance I am going to change mine. I have a piece of steel plate mounted and rely on the magnetic style base to hold my indicator in place. It has worked well but your versionlooks rock solid. I appreciate you guys that post pictures because it gives all of us an opportunity to see how others do things.
