Does anyone have any information on the termainal performance of 60gr V-max bullets in .224? I am starting to reload these bullets for my .22-250 and want to know will they exit ground hogs and keep on going for a ways, or do they blow up explosively and stop dead in thier tracks. I live in a lightly populated area in the country with houses scattered along the roads and I'm worried about over penetration on ground hogs. I don't want these things flying for miles and hitting a house. I currently use 40 gr. V-max bullets loaded to 3800 fps and they explode and NEVER exit the ground hog. I know i don't have to worry about them.

Any other info will be apperciated. load recipies, acuracy reports, kill pics etc...

This, like your other .22-250 question really is suited for the factory/hybrid board, but...

I used to shoot a .22-250, and a .222 Rem quite a bit. There are really 2 bullets that worked best for your needs. I'll say this first though. No bullet can correct for being aimed in a stupid direction. If there is a house behind your target DON'T SHOOT! Move to another location, and get that Hog from the other way. If you want a bullet to come apart, try these 2 bullets, Speer TNT 50grain worked well in my .222, or the 52 grain Berger MEF (Maximum Expansion Factor) in the .22-250, for reasons onknown to me, Berger changed the name of that bullet to the Varmint bullet... I guess most varmint hunters didn't understand what Maximum Expansion meant?

Both of those bullets were devistating on groundhogs. I never pushed the .22-250 that hard like you are... a few extra feet per second really doesn't do much for you downrange, but good accuracy will increase your ability to take hogs at long range. The longest hog I got on a single shot with a .22-250 was 840 yards measured with Lieca Geovids. Speed was never the issue, accuracy was. The .222 shot best with 50 grain bullets and the .22-250 did best with 52 grain bullets. That's whats important, find the bullet that shoots best for the rifle, and use it.

I seated my bullets at the lands with slight pressure against the lands so that the lands left nice little rectagnle marks on the ogive of the bullets. At the time it is what worked for me.

These questions and answer really aren't Benchrest, they are meant for the factory hybrid forum.
