Hello, I'm new here. I have just bought a couple of Suhl 150 position rifles. I am interested in learning more about bench rest shooting by shooting club matches, etc. I would be interested to read any tips one may have to make these more competitive. I am interested in buying a BR stock and tuner.
I have questions on bedding. I have had these out of the stock and noticed a small recoil lug inletted in the reciever and stock. Does any one use that lug when they bed a BR stock or do they do away with it. Also where can I get a decent barrel tuner with out costing an arm and a leg.
On ammo, is there a brand of ammo that usually works better with these rifles. I don't espect to get BR groups out of budget ammo but if there is a mid range ammo that does well in these rifles it would help my budget while I learn to shoot these things. I would like to avoid buying a bunch of high price ammo that my gun won't shoot well. I have some experience in Highpower and pistol competition but not in benchrest. I would appreciate any helpful advice. Thanks! :)
 
My Turbo has a slot milled in it just like the Suhl. It is a clever way to bed the rifle with a recoil lug, I think. My suggestion would be to contact Ron Hoehn for the tuner, (Call Ron Hoehn - ph. (636) 745-8144) he can also point you in the direction of a good smith. I`d bed it in a fiberglass stock and try a few lots of (SK Match, SK pistol match, Lapua master, or Eley club EPS) decent mid price ammo, and see what it likes. I`ve seen SK Pistol Match shoot 250`s in IR 50, you may get a good lot.

I appreciate your reply! I have read good things and heard about the Lapua ammo in recent years as well as some of the wolf. I'm not sure where to get the SK ammo. This months precision shooting had an article about rimfire ammo lots, but he tested them in tuned factory rifles. I'd like to see a similar test with a rifle of proven accuracy and match chamber. Thanks again.
 
Every barrel different

You'll get your best results, by testing all the different ammo brands in your own rifle. What shoots in one, might not shoot in yours. Eley & Lapua are always available to test by lots, but you can never tell about SK or Wolf. In case you didn't know, Wolf, SK and several of the Lapua lower grades are are manufactured in the same plant. Next year, they may all be different, so it appears, that all of them are a crap shoot.
 
Suhl stock

I have read several times that the Suhl is basically a copy of the Anschutz 54 rifles. If I buy a stock for the Anschutz 54 will it bed to the Suhl with out extra inletting? Do I need different stock screws? if so will the screws from the model 54 fot the suhl. I can buy metric dies and shorten/rethread the current bolts if I need to, but it's kinda hard to make them longer...
 
Don Stith makes an awesome stock that is inletted for the Suhl. He made one for mine, and it's out getting bedded right now. I think he charges $250 for the stock.

Don Stith is a name I'v read before. Does he have a web site or contact info out there anywhere. I'll try to google him too. I'd like to see some photos of the stock if there are any available.

OK, I found the stith website.
Now more questions. Which type of stocks are legal in rimfire competition? there are several types and weights available. Is there a stock that would be legal in both 50/50 and the other one I think is ARA. I liked the Shrew on his website. Are there weight classes like in centerfire, or does the stock have to conform to a particular shape? I realize most use fiberglass, but I just love the look of wood. If I glue or fully bed the wood stock will I really notice that much difference.
 
Most anything is legal in ARA. RBA and IR50/50 have weight classes. Sporter is the tuff class, especially in 50/50. The sporter 50/50 rules were recently posted here by Wilbur...do a search. I think you would have trouble making weight with a Suhl in that class anyway. On this sights homepage there are logo's for all the associations webpages. Their rules will be found there.
 
Actually Dons website is a little out-dated. He now makes what he calls the '250' style stock. I like it better than his other styles. I think his stock would be legal in most if not all rimfire BR leagues although I don't think it could be used for sporter class. Here is a pic of my old Suhl stock and the one that Don made for me. Keep in mind I paid for a wood upgrade to get the spalted maple.

I really need to learn to shoot!

I have been working a lot of hours lately. I finally got glass mounted on the otherwise unaltered Suhls. I can't count the number of times I shot 3 or four shots into the same hole, then bobble one of the shots and open the group up to about .370 or so. I think these things will really shoot for the money I spent, if I can get better with my bench technique and wind reading. I have had a hard time finding any match ammo here in Oklahoma City area. I am shooting some old Tenex I bought about 8 years ago for a different rifle. It out shoots me at the moment. I have decided to go ahead and get a dedicated bench stock since these 3 position stocks sit so high and have an offset butt. If I could shoot better I think this ammo would shoot in the high .2 range. I have been dealing with the March winds here in Oklahoma.
I'm thinking I probably should buy the mid price ammo and shoot a lot more to learn, rather than but a little of the really high priced stuff. I don't think my ability right now would take advantage of the best stuff. I really appreciate every one's advice.

If Don Stith reads this I have tried to call 3 or 4 times but haven't got hold of you yet. When is the best day and time to call?

original suhl stock

im looking for a original suhl 150 standard stock in pretty good shape i've heard there are some layin around. please let me know trying 2 build another one. have action and barrel thanks
