Suggestions for a build

I shoot long range and don't know much about the rimfire world. I have gotten the hots lately to build a "trainer" style rifle modeled after one of my A-5 style tactical bolt guns. I am thinking maybe a 17HMR or Mach 2 in lieu of the 22LR.

What do you think would be a good chambering?

What action would you suggest for a repeater bolt gun?

What (who's) barrel?

If i am going for an A-5 stock am I stuck with a certain action? Maybe I should ask if rimfire actions are the same size as centerfire actions?

You suggestions are appreciated.

Tony

Tony, the actions are not going to be all that close, repeaters narrow it further. The Turbo repeater is out but I would not want to try and feed it from the clip. You're probably best with a 1900 or 54 series anschutz, especially feeding from a clip.

Tim,

I have a 1517 in the safe that I never shoot. Is that close to a 54?

Not quite, it's the 64 based action but for what you're going for, since you've got it as well, I'd guess it would be suitable. They generally shoot fairly well.

Tim,

I wasn't expecting my Turbo to feed all too well from the clip but I was surprised when a round fed from the clip a slid into the chamber just as slick as you please.

64 ans

I have a 64 that shot great the first year. Had to re-barrel it because it could not hold a 0.5" at 50 meters.
Still not my favorite. That would be Sako, it does 0.25" at 50 meters all season.:D

40x rf

Get a Remington 40X rimfire and put it in a McMillan or other Remington SA target stock. Shoot at 200 yards as the wind effect on a 22RF at 200 is about the same as a 308 at 1000 yards.

Don't have one, but I do shoot a 22LR at 200 yards for LR practice. It's tough!!!!

:)

Gentlemen, thank you all for the help so far.

Anyone have any experience with the Sako Quad?

Again, I will not compete with this gun. It is just for fun.

Tony, I have a SAKO Finnfire and love it. It is the only 22RF I have that will shoot around 2.5" at 200 yards. We shoot a 200 yard 22RF match each month at our Club on a A21 target.

I have no expereince with the Quads.

The 40X in a McM stock will give your the same weight as a "full bore" gun for practice.

I don't think you would go wrong if you chose a Winchester 52C as the basis for any 22 bolt gun you wanted to build up. A B, A, or some of the pre A's would be almost as good. There are cheaper and lighter actions to work with but you would never be able to build a rifle with better characteristics - or one that looked better. You can even build a "sporter" with bench rest accuracy if you want. And finally if you search around you can still buy 52's at reasonable prices. I have never payed over $600 for one I could build into a custom.

Thanks to all for your advice!

I have a lot to chew on to make a selection. I will let you know what I pick and hopefully post some pics of the finished product.
