Strange Groups

Today, I sighted my rifle for an upcoming bench match. When I shot at the sighters, I'd put in 5 shots. All went into groups no bigger then 1/2" at 50 yards. However, when I shot at the ARA target, one shot in each, the shots were all over the place. An agg group would have been about 2". There was virtually no wind at the range. Usually, this range feels like hurricanes running through it but today was dead calm so I can't blame it on the wind.

I repeated this test a number of times and also tried it at 25 yards with the same result. Any ideas?

2" agg would be large even for a barrel that is leaded. Action screws, bedding or a seriously wounded crown.
 
Did you have wind flags out? Up here in NY we sometimes run across conditions where there is no wind what so ever. When this happens, shots can drift all over the place due to the thermals on the range. you'd be suprized where the shots end up.

i know when the wind stops i stop shooting!! i believe this man:rolleyes: has a finger on the problem myself.

it could be shooting groups is different than shooting for score. When shooting for score you have to move your rifle to a new point of aim and settle it in the bags. Sometimes when shooting for score we tend to forget the necessary things like settling the gun, sometimes we also tend to lean a little heavier to get point of aim right wich is all wrong. If rifle shot good groups it'll shoot good scores, you just need to figure how to sweet talk it!;)

not always. i have a rifle that shoots groups out of this world. the guy i got it from shot arg and this rifle is a amazing group shooter. on a one piece rest i have it just didn't shoot score very well. i have allowed people who shoot better than me try it out and it still shoot low scores, but shot groups out of this world.

i have tried different things and have come out with much better scores, but still not anyplace where itshould be if your ideal is correct.
