Stocks for the Savage FT/R

My son just picked up a Savage F/TR, being this is his first target rifle it will do fine but the stock doesn't fit him that great.

The plastic cheek pieces Savage sends with the gun are a joke. I was thinking about buying a replacement stock for his B-Day. Does anyone use the Mcmillan MBR-Tooley? Mcmillan's website Say's it's not legal for F Class competition... Is that correct?

If you replaced your stock with a custom, who did the work and what type did you get?

Rich,

It might make for a little 'smaller' of a birthday present, but you might consider getting an aftermarket cheekpiece for that stock.

Karsten Custom Camo makes some adjustable saddle cheekpieces for the M1A/M14 platform that also work quite well on bolt guns. Pretty easy to install... drill a couple 5/16" holes for the 1/4-20 carriage bolts and you're basically done. Added bonus: no more having to remove that factory cheekpiece to fit a bore guide in place - just collapse the cheekpiece and you're done. Pretty good upgrade for ~$60 counting shipping

Here's his website:

Go to the upper left corner and click on the 'For Sale Items' link. You'll probably want the Model 'A' version.

Karsten cheekpieces

1+ to the Karsten cheek pieces to have the Savage F/TR into more what it should have been from the factory.

The Choate cheek piece from Savage is a gross mistake by Savage to an otherwise fine rifle!

Rich,
I have no idea why that statement is on McMillen's web site, there are plenty on the MBR's being used in f-class. They are used on "open" class guns very often, as a mater of fact I am using them on 2 of my f-class rifles. I can't say how they would work with a bipod for use in "f/tr" though. When used with a front rest and rear bag in open class they are very good stocks.

Guys,
In F Class competition - be it Open or F/TR - the rifle is rested front and rear - just like a benchrest rifle.
Anyone seen an adjustable cheek-piece on a benchrest rifle?
Cheers

Vince, I see adjustable cheek pieces on BR stocks all over.

Have a look at master class stocks. I think their stocks are some of the best.

Vince,

Before Asa gets on his soapbox ;) I'll point out that despite appearances, F-Class ain't BR, doubly so for F/TR. Shooting from a bipod is different skillset and free recoil doesn't work so well.

I don't know about everybody else but I've tried shooting with no cheek contact... my neck muscles didn't much appeciate it by the end of the day - started twitching & tremoring - not conducive to good scores on that last string.

YMMV,

Don't know where you are seeing this about the MBR not being legal for F-Class. What the web-site says is that the MBR is not legal for IBS or NBRSA short range bench (100-200-300 yd.). This is because the bottom of the butt does not meet the short range benchrest taper rules. It is widely used for F-Class matches. Dick D. at McMillans

Savage F/TR Stock - Day late and dollar short..

I don't know if I'm too late to help but I've been shooting a McRee's stock on my Savage target action.

I'm just a casual target shooter not a benchrest shooter but I like the ability to change it up. I have two fore ends, a 'hunter' that is 2" wide (on the rifle) and a 3" wide fore end for bags, back end is very adjustable as to lenght, height of pad, cant of pad etc... and it doesn't need bedding as stock is all alum.
