Stock patterns

Where could you get a benchrest pattern to build your own stock.

garrisone you take a bunch of lumber, lots of bondo and you add some and subtract some till you get what you want!:D That is the way I used to do it. Now, I just open my cad system, input some basic geometry to get started, then begin to add some and subtract some till I get what I am looking for!:D:D

ps.....I am not kidding either:eek:

Mike,
Are you back to making stocks for the public again?

Hi Kent,

Nearly. I cannot believe how long this project has taken, and the patience of my customer. I should have his first p/o filled by mid Janurary and after that, I have three stocks to finish up for very patient people here on BRC and two on RFC. When those are done, I will talk to Wilbur about getting back on line again. I hopefully have found a good steady supply of Spalted Sycamore and that will likely not be ready until mid Feb so maybe all will work out at about the same time.

Thanks for asking.

Mike

Mike,
The spalted Sycamore stock you made for me is SUPER! Rides like it was on rails. Crazy pretty too:) Wilbur likes to shoot that rifle:) and he shoots it well too!

Mike,

Are you using a CNC router to make stock blanks?

Have you ever used a duplicating router for that purpose?

I am just wondering how it is done. I would probably start with a bandsaw.:)

Concho Bill

Hi Bill,

Yes I now use cnc and have had many duplicators. One of the worst business decisions I made was selling all my duplicators to force myself to going all cnc.

Whether cnc or duplicator, the bandsaw always hits wood first, unless it is like this oem job I am on. All the parts for the stocks are precut on cnc, then glued together to make the blank. Bandsaw isn't needed in that case.

With a duplicator I do it just like I told garrisone. I start with wood, bondo and glue, make a rough blank and remove and add till I get it like I want it. On a duplicator you can get several good parts without doing anything else, but if it is going to be a long term pattern it is best to coat it with fiberglass or at least resin to give you a much harder surface for tracing with the stylus.

On cnc, it is a different media all together, but not unlike the same process.

You literally lay down some geometry, begin to build surfaces in 3d, then either take away, or add to until you get what you want. The problem is, I can do a good finished pattern for tracing in 8-10 hrs and it can take me 8-10 weeks.....or months to get it right in the computer. I have something like 200 patterns I need to get to the computer but do not have the cash at $1500-8k per stock and many of these are way above my ability, and therefore my above statement......selling the duplicator was the worst business decision I ever made! :D But we have to grin and "bare" but I will just stop at the grinning part!!!:D

If I can answer any questions, feel free to pm me and I will send you contact info.

Kent after I posted that post to you I remembered one more stock I have promised, and in fact am looking for the wood. Austrailian Lacewood, built to the pattern you have for a man called Wilbur!

Mike

Mike,
That lacewood is pretty. I'm sure he'll be happy if you make him a stock out of it. Take care of yourself, and hope you and your family have great Christmas. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I think I might be able to get ahold of some of that stuff... Depends whether or not the lumberyard I have in mind has it in stock.

katokoch there are two different kinds of lacewood. One is from South America and is sometimes sold as lacewood and sometimes as leopardwood. I just discovered this recently thinking I had found some Australian.....that is, until I picked the board up and nearly broke my back! That stuff was heavy!

If you find some, shoot me a pm here, or send word to Wilbur that you might have found some wood for him a new stock. That ought to get his gitty up going.:D

Mike

Kent and others, I don't know how many of you know, but my wife had breast cancer last year, surgery, chemo and pronounced cancer free in Dec. This August it was back and this time in her liver. If you do belive in prayer, please keep here name there. Her name is Donna, and I can tell you she is a warrior. Besides having to live with me, she has endured kidney transplant, multiple complications from that, many other maladies plus this cancer. She has never complained....not once! I wish I could say that.

This is part of the reason my hiatus has been so long on this oem project.

I look forward to the day I can come to a match, take a long breath of rimfire aroma in the air and sell stocks again. At the cost of competition now, I doubt I will ever get to compete again, but if I can help others....then I win anyway!

Mike

jefferson, you should be ashamed of yourself!:D right......if it is the stock I remember, gorgeous is about the only word to describe it!
