Stock Finishing Suggestions

I have a Heavy Barreled 243 built on a Hall Action that I use for hunting chucks. The stock (which is a composite type) has taken on some dings and I have also roughly filled in some holes where a previous owner had some pachmeyer removable studs installed (pretty big holes). I was thinking about filling the dings and holes and sanding the stock smooth followed by painting it a flat black color.
I was hoping someone might suggest a good product that is easy to work with to fill and sand, what papers to begin and end with. Also I need to gear up with a spray gun for my compressor and get some paint.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Auto Body Supply

You should be able to find some filler in a tube. We use to call it Green Stuff. This is used to fill the small pin holes and slight blems; without having to mix up a batch of Bondo.

The Auto Body Supply House should have the sand paper etc.

The finished product will only be a good as the final prep.

Because the area of the stock is so small you should get a very nice finish, out of a spray can.

HOWEVER you did say you were thinking about "flat black" if so I recommend "Chip Guard" in a spray can. This paint goes on with a slighty pebbled finish and is tuff as all get out. You see it along the rocker pannels of some vehicles.

The best part of this project is that if you screw it up, just get some more sand paper and start over. Sort of like painting a motor cycle fender:)=

JB Weld or similar epoxy products. Quick, cheap and easy to find.

Bondo - yuck !!

I had one Ruger .257 come in with that used as bedding.
It shot much better when cleaned up and rebedded with proper material.

Try EVERCOAT Polyester Glazing Putty to fill pin holes and low areas. This bonds the best and is hard when cured. Mix in small batches.

Brown Precision has a great video on bedding and finishing their stock blanks.

Think this out.
Set up is crucial to a paint job.
For example you need to paint behind the pistol grip and bolt handel recess first.

Thanks for the replies. I will look for some of these products and have at it.

On filling those holes make sure and rough the area around the holes with some 80 grit by hand then blow out mix filler and spread over holes and fill the scratches from the paper as well.Try to get close from the get go as this will save you some work in the long run. When your filler dries sand it with 320 then take some filler primer or sandable primer from rattle can and spray your filled spots and let them dry then spray them again.Usually three times is good.If you have minor blemishes and nicks you can smooth them out with 320 and fill them with multiple coats of filler primer.Once you got your spots primered and sanded down smooth make sure you get all of your overspray sanded off your stock I would primer the hole stock and let it dry then water sand it with 400 by hand and let it dry.If you will look at it closely when dry you can see any spots not sanded well will look shiny hit them with some 400 grit and you are ready for a nice slick paint job.Hoe this Helps.
