Stock Dilemma

I have a Scoville carbon fiber stock. It has a weight system in which a few ounces can be added, but even with the cavity full it weighs just over 11 lbs. I hate to mess with such a well made quality stock.

Has anybody modified a Scoville to get it up to about 13 lbs? Ideally the system could be removed in case one wanted to shoot LV again. Or the action/barrel could be put in a HV stock. Or the whole thing could be sold and start from scratch - but I hate to part with it. Really like the BAT action. I had finally learned how the rifle likes to be shot with a PPC. The 30 caliber is another animal.

With a 30 caliber I feel an extra two pounds would help with gun handling with the added recoil. Anyway, any suggestions or pictures would be appreciated.

Hey Tony, just as an example I put 2 lbs of weight my laminate stock last month.

A five inch piece of 7/8" round brass will give you about one pound of weight.

I drilled two five inch holes in my stock, and I just covered them up with the recoil pad.

Although I can't imagine doing that to a stock as nice as your's.

I have heard of a few people using tungsten as for their weight. It's way heavier than lead. It's about 5/8 pound per cubic inch. The main issue is to keep it from slapping around in the stock during recoil. As a general rule, the forends are stiffer on a HV stock than an LV, but the extra weight in the rear can definetly improve the way it rides the bags. If you need a source for that expensive heavy metal, just let me know.

I have a tungsten stock weight that used to belong to TJ Jackson who passed away several years ago. After he passed, my father and I bought most of his gun stuff (barrels etc.). I just put it on some digital scales and it weighs 3 pounds. It measures 1.225" diameter by 4.25" in length It has been drilled and tapped 1/4-20 because most people bolt them to an aluminum butt plate to keep them from moving forward under recoil. Sorry I didn't mention this sooner, but I just found it.

Has anyone ever seen or tried a weight design that goes between the action and scope? See pages 323 and 324 of The Benchrest Shooting Primer for a description and diagram. I'm no machinest, but the bottom is held in place using the shape of the scope bases - with two pieces that screw together.

I have a few stocks with the Dwight Scott weight port in the rear. That port is meant for adding weight to ballance front to rear weight as a LV... not to add enough weight to go from LV to HV.
