I cannot find the in stock actions section anymore and was wondering if its gone or I just can't find it?
Also what is the preferrred action for a 338 Lapua hunting rifle the Predator X or the Tac 338?
Which bottom metal is the easiest/best to use and how many rounds does it hold?
If you have built one which model is best and why in your opinion?

I'm currently playing with two of the TAC338's and I'm freakin' IMPRESSED.......

These are BadBoys....far and away the best deal in the market IMO. I cannot think of an improvement and I've tried. They are melonited bolts and blued receivers so are quite slick. Not great but quite slick. This is HUGE for hunting stuff..... you take an action that long and fat and as the mfgr you want to minimize it, to keep it as short as possible. The common answer is to rob support from the rear receiver bridge. The result is binding at the rear of the stroke.....BAAD idea for us users....... You're bellied down in the mud with yer foot hooked on a limb and you honk one down for your spotter and kit'ch-SLAM for the next round while the bullet's coasting in and 'chUUUNGGGGG!!!!!! it just FREEZES and bruises your thumbpad.....

At this point I'm ready to throw the whole works over the mountain. The gun is off track, the whole setup is compromised.....

So it's important to me that it WORK!

And so far, on the bench bitchslappin' it around the TAC338 seems to work. I haven't tried it with someone pouring water over it yet but I will.

I'm happy with Badger metal and I use "CIP length" metal which means you must mill a little tab at the rear of the loading port. This allows for 3.970 coal if memory serves.(I'll need to verify that next time I'm down in the shop) this stuff is all so new even the salesmen are cornfused. No pix but here's the page, this is all aluminum stuff and wicked light. http://badgerordnance.com/triggerguards/ I've got probably 15 Accuracy International and Accurate Mags magazines in hand right now for WSM/RUM/338L cartridges and their all marked (or UNmarked!) differently. I've got "WSM mags" that say 308 on them, magazines with no names at all and a few with "300WSM" actually stamped on them. You'll need to buy a set of wide-billed pliers (tile or welding pliers) and adjust the peewaddy out of them all.

I verified with Badger today that they WILL NOT MAKE nor is anyone making short magazines. the "short" mags available all hang down to the trigger guard bow. The Badger metal uses the ubiquitous AI mags (Accuracy International) which are quite robust. Clanky and cranky mil-spec, but fairly robust. I've wrapped them with tape etc......but so far nobody's interested in flush mags except HS Precision.

Glenn Seekins has another incarnation of this same setup and Precision Shooting Sports has it in the works but Badger HAS IT, in hand with the bugs out, and all the stock companies have their inletting numbers. I recently had two stocks inletted for PSS metal and it left a lot to be desired. PSS is OK bottom metal but the finish flakes off easier than Badger. They all have stupid "tactical quick release" razor-hook mag levers on them except for Seekins http://www.cstactical.com/Seekins-P...on/Seekins-S/A-308-Bottom-Metal.html?vmcchk=1 and THEY have been a little cagey about whether or not they're really set up for bug-free 338L stuff.... They SAY yes, and people over on the "shoot long and hard" forums talk about them and even use them. But they're not listed on the website and I've heard of some tics..... Let me just say that I DON'T KNOW about the Seekins stuff but it sure looks good!

AI mags will hold 3-4rds in the short and 6 or 7 in the long. Reason I say this is, I "improve" the 338L (I think it's worthless as it stands. The 20degree shoulder ruins it) and this makes it really tight to fill up. Same with WSM's, they list one more than I ever put in. In other words, the stuff is all called "5-rd" and "10-rd" but that's rated for 308 sized stuff. You'll get a bunch of rounds in anyways.

A company called Accurate Mags has been promising new bottom metal and new staggered mags for about a year and a half now. I spoke with them after the SHOT Show (last week) and they're again promising "shipping this month."

My personal problem is that I detest magazines that hang down. In this (as in most aspects of my life) I differ radically from the mainstream buyer. The typical buyer LIKES hooks and protrusions and fingerbiters of all sorts. Threy want CAPACITY!! This same bunch of buyers will ignore a 6shot 45ACP and brag about their "18rd 9mm" and they rule the market. This is specifically why I have trouble "getting into sporting goods" as in dealing/selling. The buying public WANTS smoke and mirrors!

but anyway..... I also spent some time with HS Precision. I'm not sure yet but this may be an option for all steel bottom metal. I'm working on the details.

Stiller's been running 338's every three months. They normally have them in stock. Call Russ.

As I said, new stuff right now. I haven't found exactly what I want in a hunting setup yet but my perfect setup is flush on the bottom for carrying and only holds two rounds...... I doubt it will ever be made. I will end up cutting my own mags down sooner or later.

The only person I found who'll index the 338 Lapua is Gordy hissownself. I'll save my opinions on this matter as it's a contentious subject here on this board :) and elsewhere.

Suffice it to say that I bought a lathe....... I'm sick of people calling me names.

And I'm LOVIN' IT!!!!

LOL

BTW, I fergot...... SPEND THE 70.00 ON THE 20MOA PICATINNY RAIL!!!!!!!..... and glue it on permanently WITH the provided pins. It's a pretty bulletproof setup.

I'm impressed with the way Jerry thinks

So far I'm wringing it out in a McMillan Heavy Benchrest stock with 6lb of lead in the butt, and a Manners T5a overbuilt with carbon fiber. At under 5lb one would not want to fire it in the Manners stock with the muzzle brake off!

I'm inletting a McMillan A5 to try.

I'm still looking for the perfect (to me) hunting stock but my next big push will be to try the Sako Varminter from McMillan.

Update,

HS Precision standard Rem700LA bolts right up. I got home from work tonight, yarnked apart a 270 and bolted the parts straight onto the Stiller TAC338.

It feeds.

The flush-mounted mag with about a 1/4 inch hangy-down center holds two of my blown out .338L rounds comfortably. The folks at HS Precision told me that some folks can cram 3rdfs of standard 338L into their largest mag. looks like I've cured my dilemma re what bottom metal to use in my A5 stock ;) I've carried the 270 with this magazine in a Hogue and it nestles nicely, no tendency to roll or pinch.

I'm jazzed

I called Russ Hayden today and his wife said they only carry BAT actions.
I got an e-mail from a friend who shoots the 338 Edge and has the Wyatt box on his action. He thought the Seekins was set up for a longer round? I will call them in the morning.
Lynn

You mill the same tab out for the Wyatt box as for CIP length mags..... AFAIK this is as long as you can go with a closed mag for a coal of around 3.750 altho I keep hearing claims for 3.9 coal for Seekins "open backed mags" which I can't find any info on.

I doubt you'll find anyone to chamber an Edge to the accuracy standard you've come to expect.

Please let me know how you fare getting info on the Seekins stuff.

I was calling the wrong Russ-see post above.I gave Russ from Stillers a call and he had a Tac 408 with a 20 MOA in stock so I bought that instead.I went with the 1.6 diameter repeater so maybe a 338 Big Baer or 338 Snipetac? pushing the 300's at 3300fps with good case life.

LOL I didn't even think of that! When you said "I called Russ Hayden today...." I just thought "??? so???"

I forgot to mention "Russ at Stillers"

I'll be curious to see can ya's built an accurate rifle from CheyTac stuff, keep me posted. Some are saying that the Jamison brass is good. I couldn't use it myself, just can't find it in me to support the guy.

I hope you like the action.

I will be necking it down to either 375 or 338 as I already did the straight 408 thing and didn't like the bullets. You can get 408 brass from Vierco.

Seekin's stuff

I have a Stiller Predator Extreme in a Manners stock with Seekins detachable mag bottom metal.
I have both the 3-round and the 5-round mags. Haven't shot it much yet -- but no problems so far.
Seekins also makes a pic rail, 30 moa, to fit the larger diameter of the Extreme action.
My only complaint is that the rail didn't come with the 8-40 srews -- even after I spoke to Seekins twice, he promised to send them, and I told him I knew that the action had blind holes and the screws would have to be shortened. Why ship a rail without screws? It's like selling an oil filter without the rubber gasket. I hate it when manufacturers don't provide the necessary fasteners and then say "you can get them at Brownells or a local gunsmith." Gimme a break; I didn't sign up to spend additional time or money, after waiting patiently for the rail, to get the proper fasteners. I tried two gunshops -- neither had the proper torx screws. I did find some fillister head slotted screws. Seekins said "this is normally a gunsmith install." Really? I've epoxy bedded a dozen or so rails, and don't need a 'smith to do it for me. Just send the damn screws, Glen. It's a really nice low-profile rail, but when a customer buys a rail and a set of rings, you ought to send fasteners with the rail.

Hi Dog's Elvis,

What length do you need? I have .205" 8-40's [what we use on our low profile rails] and .270". Call me Monday - 972-429-5000.

Al,
Are you confusing Rick Jamison (the WSM law suit guy) with Marc Jamison (founder of Jamison International, makers ofJamison brass) or did Marc do something to piss you off.
FYI I am on board with not supporting Rick.

THANK YOU CHISOLM!!!! (James)

I most certainly AM and this is purely my mistake. I should never have made the connection without checking!

I apologize to Marc Jamison of whom I know nothing and will leave these posts up in the hope that any damage I may have done with this inference be rectified by reading these followup posts.

BAD INFO and BAD INFERENCE on my part.
