Stevens Model 44

Gentlemen,

Can anybody tell me if a Stevens Model 44 action could safely handle the 17 HMR or 17 HMR2?

Thank you,
Justin

What caliber is it now? It should handel the pressure I have done a few from 22lr. to 22.mag with no problem, it is a very strong action for rim fires

Yes

Z,
Yes, but why would you want to?

The 44 action is just a much larger Favorite action. It would be kind of oversized for the job & you can buy a brand new currently made Favorite in 17 for less than rebarreling the 44 would cost.

Ron,

It is just something I've always wanted to do. I like the lines of the 44, and the extra heft...the Favorites just look and feel too dinky to me. I will be doing most of the metalwork myself, which I enjoy, and farming the stockwork out. I've always wanted a single shot rimfire with an externally adjustable "period" looking scope on it, and a drop dead gorgeous walnut stock. To my eye, there is no prettier rifle.

Now I just need to decide on either California English walnut, or Black walnut.

Thanks,
Justin
