Starter bolt action

I am looking for a reasonably priced 22 bolt action to shoot from the bench. The CZ 452 has been recommended as the best choice and bang for the buck without dropping to much money. I was told it was accurate. Can anyone recommend a better option?

Starter Benchrest rifles

My thoughts, as a first year BR shooter. You will spend about $700 to $800 for a new CZ, rings & scope. And, you will struggle a lot with the 3 pound trigger. Go to some matches, my guess is you will find second hand BR rifles available for little more, and you will get a more competitive rifle/scope in the process. Take a look at the classified ads on this site. Also, do you want to shoot Sporter class ? Heavier classes ? Find out what your nearest group is shooting and get a rifle that will be in the same class. Good luck and have fun.

I would agree with David. Look for something used. A benchrest gun is a good investment. You can always sell it, and you will get 90% of your money back at the worst. I have always liked the 40X as a starter. You can usually pick one up without breaking the bank. You can put a Jewell trigger on them. Easy to upgrade to an aftermarket barrel. They are just great all the way around.

David, don't really know enough to disagree with you except with the CZ Trigger. It can be easily adjusted below 2lbs and a simple spring replacement will bring it down to 8-10 oz's. I have put new springs in 2 of mine. I do agree with the rest of your post for what ever that is worth.

It depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to be immediately competitive there are a lot of custom BR rifles available this time of year for a good price. I would suggest at least taking a look at Anschutz, 40X's, etc smithed by famous smiths such as Voelker, Davis, Hongisto, just to name a few. There are often bargains out there.

I've tried competing with an 8 - 10 oz trigger and that is a big handicap over a 2 oz or less. Unable to shoot free recoil as rifle will move trying free recoil with a heavier trigger. The other choice with a 8 oz or greater trigger is the "death grip". Rich

biathlon basic

I have also heard good reports about the Izhmash biathlon basic although it does not have a br stock. I certanly wish they were made in SS. I want to say they go for about $329 or so. I heard it said they the CZ has a tight bore but not a real match chamber.

get a used 10.5 lb gun. it will save you money in the long run. check out the class adds section.
