So today I took apart some bedding on a BAT. Stock is a skeletonized "Obeche" from Shehane so's when I inlet it it goes all funkywakk...... some bedding got into the screwhole for the front of the trigger guard, just enough to form "threads" of 'glas. So I took it apart and put it together..... and then again only THIS time it was hanging in a barrel vise and I took the screws out in different order....... the trigger guard screw musta' got just a liddle side tension from the warping stock...... So I'm spinning 'er out, I've COME OUT about .100 and it's just "stiff-a-little" and allovasudden that 'screeeee' and she comes to a halt in about 1/4 turn.

Back in, 1/8th turn and stop

back out 1/16th turn and stop

BUGGAHHH!

I twisted 'er OFF and drilled it out without touching the threads. It was the last three threads only, WELDED.......Steenking stainless....... Little side tension, maybe some snarf from the bottom of the hole because I'd run the screw clear down this time........I went ahead and bottom-tapped every hole on the action. I'm tempted to lap them!

I'm switching out all the screws.........

:)

anyways, got 'er done

You're right Mike ;)

And I did lube _some_ but just the release agent wax..... and I didn't tighten the screws, this one was on the way out..... just picked up a chip, or more likely the tapped hole rolled a chip over. I should have chased out the holes, didn't.

Did now!

SS on SS DOES suck, can't argue that point. The closer in alloy and hardness the more they suck. SS pipe fittings are the worse I've ever seen, they love to weld themselves together.
I use DOW Moly "G" paste because I've got a pint can from '63, it will probably last me until about 2525. If I didn't have that, I'd probably use one of the anti-seize compounds made for SS.

The blind holes in BAT actions is a neat feature. It keeps folks from jamming the action screw into the barrel threads which REALLY makes disassembly difficult. When I get one that locks up I cut the barrel off right ahead of the receiver and bore out the thread, usually ending up with a funny looking "helicoil".
