I choose not to hijack my own 6X scope thread, which has great suggestions and input (thanks guys), so I'll start a new one.
I've only competed in one sanctioned IR 50 match at Manatee Gun Club last winter (Doug Bell, M.D.) and did not have a Sporter class rifle at the time. But I did converse with a couple of gentlemen who said they did not shoot Sporter, because their eyes were not good enough. At the time, I did not fully comprehend what they were referring too. Yes, there where some great suggestions on how to compensate with less than perfect vision as we age. However, some of the suggestions also involve a considerable amount of extra cash for high end customized scope, corrective specialize lenses in eye wear, up to eye surgery for cataracts ... all great recommendations. I can handle these costs, but many shooters can not.
I believe there is a simple solution to the IR 50/50 target that would make it much more Sporter friendly, without changing the scoring ring dimensions at all. In the printing industry, there is a term called "a reverse". This means that instead of the letters normally printing in black, the background is printed solid black and the letters reverse to white, just like the 3-4-5 ring on the IR 50 target now. The 10 ring could be reversed to a solid black with a white dot for the X. This minor modification to the existing target would be a good reference point "for center using a 6X scope" to which one could hold off for wind.
Like any change, this may fly like a lead balloon, but it's something to consider. John
