help me decide which scope i should buy for my sporter build, seems like the weaver t-36 is the most popular for 10.5 and unlimited so is there a most popular scope for sporter as well??

burris ?? variable-- what low to what high?? 6.5 to ??

Bill, if it's a custom sporter and any outlaw shoots are near, some allow up to 10x and a variable such as the leupold dot in 4-12x with ao might be a good fit. that's their vxII series and leupolds tend to weigh slightly less.

True sporter allows 6X. Burris used to be the only one out there with a quality scope, so Burris was the most popular sporter scope. Now, they allow variable, or at least some do. Any quality variable scope will do. Burris used to be about all you saw on a sporter line.

I assume you mean RBA or IR50/50 sporters.

The two I see most often are:

Leupold FX-3, 6x HBR AO
Burris 6x HBR II AO

I expect there are some also using Leupold's VX-3, 6.5-20x, and I've heard recently the Nightforce 2.5-10x compacts have found their way to some folks sporters.

Weight, adjustable objective, and target turrets tend to be the primary criteria.

Most shooters would consider the Leupold 6X AO a high quality scope. It has been around 12 years or so.

I can't find one with the AO. That's why I always thought Burris had the advantage.

Look for 6X42 Tactical, it has AO. Used to be called 6X42 AO. Leupold started making it in about 1996 or 1997.

which is lighter leupold, burris or weaver? i remember a match
where a guy was weighing beforehand and ended up switching
rings and scope to make weight, i thought he went to a burris.

I'd go with the 6-18X40 Leupold target or 6X42AO Competition, go to Leupolds website and look up the weights in the specs, and if you needed a lighter scope to make weight, look for a used Burris HBRII. I say used because I heard they stopped making the Burris. Not sure of that though.
If you need a really lighweight scope to make weight, get a 3-9X33 EFR Leupold and send it back for target turrets or use it without 'em. They're around 10 or 11 ozs., but optics aren't as good as the 6-18X40 or 6X42AO.

One thing for sure, you need as good a glass as possible for a sporter. Go to a match and look at what the guys are using and ask to look through their scopes before plunking down your cash for one. Not everyone sees the same. I don't think anyone makes a sporter scope as good as it should be, but Leupold comes very close. If they were set up right, the Burris'es are pretty good. And some folks are using a Night Force low power variable, and they love 'em.

6x scope

I am not positive but I think Burris is not making the hbr2 anymore.I called recently to try to get a retical changed and they said they did not make the 3/8 dot anymore. Leopold makes a 1/2 min. dot in there hunter bench rest. David K
