Spiral Fluted Reamers

Does anyone use spiral ground reamers? Seems like it would help with clearing chips, although with floating reamer holders, it seems like the reamer might pull itself in too far. Any issues?
Thanks!

I have a carbide sprial fluted rimfire reamer. I like it for higher cutting speed and for 5 groove barrels. That doesn't speak to the chip removal but I'd like to try one in a centerfire caliber sometime, for the same reasons. BTW, I run higher speeds with it due to being carbide, not directly because of it being spiral fluted. I like the finish it gives like this, in the leade area.

Reamer

I am thinking once I get my lathe, I will hook up the built in coolant system into a low pressure muzzle flush system and I feel that a spiral reamer will help out with pulling the chips. I am not sure that I can run cutting oil in the coolant system, so if anyone has any feedback on that, I welcome that as well. Seems like it would at least do better than squirting oil on the reamer after cutting every .003 or so.

Carbide reamers pose their own problems in low speed chambering. The spiral flutes do not evacuate chips any faster no matter what it seems like. I find no problem with hss reamers and love using my bushings for all the different tools and not having 2 sets. Do a search on here for carbide reamer and see if you really want to go down that road

Reamers

Just to be clear, I am talking about HSS reamers, not carbide. It is a $10 upcharge for spiral fluted instead of straight fluted.

Oh. Itll look cool but i cant see an advantage. If you fill up the flutes on a straight reamer youve cut too far anyway- need to clean and re-oil

Dusty, actually spiral fluted reamers where made for two reasons, finish and to evacuate chips but this only works to remove chips with a right hand helix a left hand helix will force chips down or into cutting surface, heres the problem with a right hand helix tapered reamer they pull themselves in so reamer will grab and break . So first question would be which direction is helix if right its not going to work and if left its pushing chips inward so it doesn't work on form reamers....
