specking a reamer?

When ordering a reamer for a huntING gun do you order the standard reamer or do you measure the ammo and shorten the throat to fit(plus a safety factor) and and have the reamer ground on the tight side.

This is for a .257 Weatherby. One gun will be for myself and the second for a son-in-law who will shoot any ammo that will go bang.(ammo found on the dash of the pickup or in the pocket of last years hunting coat, wipe the green and fuzz off and see if it fits in the chamber). I probably just answered my own question.

I tell my reamer maker what I want basically... the preferred bullet and a short throat and a minimum chamber... and let them make the decision on just how tight they can make it... they have more experience in dimensions... at least Dave does...

If you make it too tight it is just a problem forever...

Dave Kiff has a .257 Wby reamer with .248 freebore instead of the .350+ Weatherby freebore. It gives better accuracy and still lets you shoot factory ammo safely. Give Dave a call and ask him about it.

The only problem I see in having reamers for hunting rifles ground with unusual specs is most hunters just shoot factory ammo and I don't want to confuse them.

Just a warning. The guy said his relative wil be shooting "any ammo" I believe. With that in mind, if he shoots factory stuff he could be in for a dangerous pressure spike. That long throat is what Wby used to lower pressures.

I do have a Wby reamer that has the throat shorter and it does aid accuracy. But, I tell my clients that and they know it and load accordingly. With that in mind, I also stamp a note on the barrel specifying the short throat.

Yes safety above all else.
I wanted to be able to shoot factory ammo but did not want a sloppy chamber that you find in some of the off the shelf rifles.
As noted the freebore on factory Weatherby is long and I wanted a shorter freebore to aid in accuracy and I would rather extend the freebore by shooting than cutting it out :).

The excessive throats on factory Weatherbys are the German made ones by J.P. Sauer & Sons ... when they went to Japan to be made, Weatherby shortened the throats and changed the factory ammo load as well...

I have that and it is a dandy...

Thanks for the info. I knew the earlier ones had a longer freebore. Is that about as short of freebore as you can go and still shoot the 117 -120? grain factory ammo.

I don't know how short you can go without pressure problems with factory ammo...

I think you are just fine as long as the throat diameter is not over .2575 regardless of length (within reason). In my experience, accuracy is still good even with a relatively long throat.
As dennis mentioned, they backed off a bit on the factory loads in later years and you can get away with a bit shorter throat. With reloads, you can of course, do as you like. Regards, Bill
