spanish mauser barreled action options

I was given a .257 Roberts Ackley many years ago and shot it alot. I decided to rebarrel it several years ago and had a Shilen barrel put on it. Same chamber. I just recently started reading about the Spanish mauser action and it looks like this caliber is right at or over the pressure limit for the action. I dont particularly like the idea that years from now someone could load it hot and have a failure. The barrel is unfired now. Can I salvage the barrel for some other action? Can I have it rechambered to something more suitable? (250 Savage?) .

Well, did you load ........................

for it? If you've read Ackley's books, the premise for the "Improved" cartridge was that there was less bolt thrust as a result of this cartridge configuration, and less likelihood of the problems that plague lesser-performing rifle cartridges, even though they were loaded w/less powder and achieved a lower velocity.

Did you ever have any problems with it pressure-wise?

Was case life acceptable?

If you would like to keep it and shoot it, but are nervous, call Macool F/A in Tulsa (918-663-3880), and ask for Dave McClain. He's done many of those chamberings, and could even check it out for you. He's an excellent custom smith, and a no BS guy.
Now, if you want to just sell it, don't go to the trouble, but it sounds like you really like the rifle and enjoyed it, but are just uncomfortable, based on what you 'heard', or are reading.

HTH ;)

Yes, I loaded for it for many years. I never experienced any problems with pressure signs, case life, etc.
