November 6th and 7th we shot the final two stages (SP & UL) of the Southwest Regional Championships. Weather for the weekend was pleasant but windy – typical for Arizona this time of year. Temps ranged from high 60’s in the morning to the low 80’s by early afternoon.

Saturday we shot SP-100 in the morning. Winning the aggregate with a .2000 was the clown prince of benchrest; Tom Libby III Esquire. Tom (dressed in men's clothing this time) shot a very nice .122 on the last target to take the win. Second place was Randy Burgess with a .2258. Third place, with a .2312, went to the quiet assassin Gene DeLoney. Small group for SP-100 was shot by Dana Andrus with a .103 in match #4.

After a short lunch, we shot UL-5-100. The wind was switchy in both direction and velocity; creating challenging conditions for everyone. Winning the UL-5-100 aggregate with a very tidy .1480 was Doc (William) Marsh. Through 4 targets Doc was on pace to set a new world record; however, a .239 final target ended his record pace. Second place went to Tom Libby (T3) with a .1504 and Gary “The Oozer” Ocock shot a .1582 to finish third. Small group for UL-5-100 went to Doc Marsh with a .101 in match #3 – no zeros were shot the entire weekend. A testament to the effect conditions had on some very fine shooters.

Sunday we started with UL-5-200. Winning the aggregate with a .1557 was Gary Ocock. In second place was Todd “The Albuquerque Flash” Tyler with a .1897. Doc Marsh continued his strong shooting and took third place with a .2357. Small group for UL-5-200 was shot by Gary Ocock with a .177 in match #2.

After a short luncheon recess, we shot SP-200 in the afternoon. Dana Andrus bested the 20 other shooters and won the yardage with a .2713. Sir Walter Berger took 2nd with a .2783 and the Mayor of Wickenburg (Bob Brackney) came in 3rd with a .2889. Mr. Happy (Ed Maxwell) shot the small group for SP-200 with a very nice .264 in match #5.

The 2010 Southwest Regional Sporter Champion is Dana Andrus. Dana shot a .2639 to win the title. Randy Burgess was 2nd with a .2695 and Walt Berger shot a .2711 to take 3rd.

The 2010 Southwest Regional Unlimited Champion is Gary Ocock. The Oozer bested the other shooters with a .1559. Todd Tyler took 2nd with a .1834 and Doc Marsh was 3rd with a .1919.

THE 2010 SOUTHWEST REGIONAL 3-GUN CHAMPION IS JOE PIPOLA. Joe shot a .2722 to take the 3-gun going away. Gene DeLoney was 2nd with a .2848 and Walt Berger finished third with a .2873. This was Joe’s first 3-gun win. Your intrepid reporter was concerned that Joe’s swollen head would create gun handling problems – not the case for the Quiet Man.

THE 2010 SOUTHWEST REGIONAL 4-GUN CHAMPION IS GARY OCOCK. Gary shot a .2550 to take the 4-gun. Joe Pipola was 2nd with a .2681 and Walt Berger finished third with a .2873. This was Gary’s “umpteenth” multi-gun win. When you’re a rock star hall of fame shooter like The Oozer, you can display that “I don’t give a (fill in the blank)” attitude as you summarily win again. In addition to his normal match director duties, Gary had to call each match. He would recite the commands, give the “commence fire”, slowly walk to his bench (#41), nonchalantly shoot his group, and be cleaning his gun before most had fired a single shot on record. About the only comment Gary would make was the occasional “I’m shooting stupid” – give me a break. I could continue my cynical comments about Gary; however, I’ve got to place some fresh flowers in the Gary Ocock Pagoda I have built in my home! I genuflect in front of a photo of Gary (when he had hair) three times each day. If that does not help my shooting, I will start using my Tom Libby ruby red lipstick, my Tom Libby multi-color wig, and my Tom Libby evening gown to see if that helps!
