Smoked Cases

I have a 22 PPC Sako that when I use Norma cases they come out after shooting with black soot on the neck and body. I turn all my necks to .011,with bullet they mic to .245 and I use a .243 or .244 bushing. This problem does not happen when I use Lapua or Sako cases. Any idea what would do this only with the Norma brass ? Thanks.......Tom

Perhaps the Norma brass is lighter, and with the same load, makes less pressure, or it is springier and requires more pressure to seal, or a combination of both. In any case, it sounds as though your load is too light.

If your cases are smoked below the neck your pressures aren't high enough for the powder you're using. Some powders don't burn efficiently below a certain pressure and will smoke up the cases like crazy while others won't.

You're going to have to up your powder charge for the Norma cases, and probably make sure that you don't use the heavier charge in the Lapua or Sako cases. If may only take a half grain increase too.

What's your neck chamber size? Why not eliminate the soot by sticking with Lapua or Sako cases? :)

The rifle is a Sako A1 HB with standard chamber dimentions. The smart thing to do is to only use the Lapua and Sako cases, but I have about 100 of the Norma's and would really like to use them.I will try some of the above idea's.
