Slippery rifle on bags.

I have been messing about with various stock tape etc to see what makes for a consistent smooth set up.

I have ended up with cordura Edgewood front and rear bags and found that normal wide PVC tape on the stock well treated with a couple of coats of car polish seems to be as slippery as any other set up.

I have tried normal see through stock tape and teflon tape as well as melted carnauba wax impregnated into the front bag. Simple PVC tape with polish seems as good as any, especially when used with Carnauba on the front bag.

What do others use in the way of tape and additives ?

How much tension on the sides of the forend ?

Is it a case of the slipperier the better for free recoil ? Does some resistance help or hinder consistency ? What if one was pinning the rifle against the stop when shooting quick ?

Does it all really matter that much so long as it is consistent ??

Thanks

Bryce

PTFE - Teflon Powder

I too have been tying to determine the best treatment of bags to get the most consistent tracking.

After a lot of trials I find that PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene, akaTeflon) Powder applied lightly to the applicable surfaces of condura bags gives the best results with consistent release and slide. PTFE has the lowest friction coeficients of any solid. PTFE also has identical static and dynamic friction coeficients which avoids the slip-stick characteristics of waxes and most spray lubricant coatings.

While inert, it is best to not inhale the powder. Of course it is best not to inhale any aerosols or powder including popular Silicone lubricants.

I buy it bulk from http://www.spurlocktools.com/id39.htm.

Bryce, email me. dbugholes@aol.com I have some material for your bags that I'd be happy to have you try out as a sample. You'll like it. ...Dave

Thanks for the comments guys.

I will try and track down some ptfe powder although based on a couple of quick phone calls earlier I think a ptfe spray is more likely, the powder seemed hard to come by here.

Dave, thanks for the offer. I am down in New Zealand so I don't expect you to send stuff as a sample, I'll drop you an email.

Bryce

Any further comments to my and Jeff's "how slippery and why" question would be appreciated.
