Size of hole through tuner?

Guys, I've been making and using tuners for a decade. One thing I have not considered is the actual hole or shape of hole through it. I have used 24mm as a rule, but all of a sudden I thought of some old barrels that could be used for tuners. Any ideas? What size would you recommend, and why?

I recall reading in a discussion of sound moderators that there was a certain amount of disruption to the projectile's flight if the device wasn't precisely aligned - and they weren't talking about the projectile hitting the machinery. On that basis, I feel that you might be better off if the bore of the tuner was on the generous side.

Recalling a thread last week where somebody spoke of a tuner being blown off the muzzle, you might need to evaluate what all the relevent effects of that high speed gas are on the tuner and the projectile while it's still within the confines of the tuner.

You might also consider what effect powder fouling might have on the tuner & how reletively easy or difficult it might be to keep it at bay, were that shown to be an issue.

How's things in your part of the world my friend.....

The hole through the muzzle device, (tuner), for the 22 Long Rifle should be at least 11MM.......(eleven MM)

With a hole this size, the muzzle blast will not affect the bullet's passage.

I know this as I ran tests back when I developed the first muzzle attached devices, (tuners) I was worred about the muzzle blast affecting the bullet.

I started with a .308" diameter hole, in the muzzle device, (tuner), tested, then bored it a few thousandths, tested some more, then when I reached 10.18MM, ( roughly .400" ) the bullet was no longer affected by the muzzle blast....this was in a 9 inch long muzzle device (tuner), much longer than a normal muzzle device, (tuner)...we use today...

Hope your shooting is going well my friend.

Your friend, Bill Calfee

Thanks

You know, all of a sudden questions pop up and then it's time to see what direction it takes you. Over here the winter hasn't let go yet. Snow this morning and the lake in front of the house still has ice. Anyway, like before I'm into barrels and trying to get things work for my students.Hopefully I'll get a chance to try out some of the new ammo from lapua before the Olympics this August. I should get a couple of barrels more to test too. I like the current Anschütz ones with most brands of ammo. But since the dollar is low I could get a pair from maybe Lilja. They will be 16twist if I get it. Due to temperature in this area I think they would do nicely :) Thanks for all your help by the way.

Hole in tunner

For the 22lr if you make the hole less than .224 you're going to have problems. Good Luck
