Thought some of you might enjoy my latest project modifying a new $300 Rem 700 30-06 ADL for 600 - 1000 yard shooting. I shot it this morning at 100 yards, cleaning after every round to break in the barrel. The rifle started out as a 7 1/2 pound Dale Earnhart Signature ADL, circa 2007 with a pencil thin barrel in a synthetic stock. I filled every nook and cranny of the stock with lead shot and epoxy, I bedded in the action, and epoxyed on a 1 inch thick by 2 1/2" wide Oak plank under the forend to tie the forend to the action and give a good level seat for the rifle on the front bag. The barrel is fully touching all of the forend, I made no attempt to float the barrel. The weight came out to 18 pounds. I loaded up 44 grns of Varget behind 165 grn Nosler BT's (recommeded by Nosler as an accurate load) and commenced firing. By the end of the 50 shot breakin (1 minute between shots), I was getting 1" groups. I am seating the bullets at 0 jump, which barely gives me .3" of seating in the neck. I am very pleased with my minimal investment. The recoil is very tolerable at this heavy weight. I have a lot of reloading experimentation to go to try and tighten my groups. I have my first chance at a 600 yard range shoot next week and I am hoping I can at least see some 6" groups. This fall I will be putting on a custom heavy Parma barrel and having the action trued. I hope to keep my total investment under 1200 dollars, cause that is all I can afford! Lots of fun.

I hope you reach your goals. It's always great when you do, especially with a rifle that you build yourself.

I would have done one thing differently. I would have broken in the barrel and shot for accuracy before doing any work. Establish a baseline against which results can be measured.

Good luck:)

Model14: Wishing you continued good luck with your project Rifle.
One of my 30/06's shoot the 165 gr. Nosler Partitions really well using IMR 4895 powder and Federal 210M (Match) primers.

Shot at 200 yards today, increased Varget load to 45, chronoed at 2485 with Nosler 165 BT's. Still holding 1 MOA. Man does that tiny barrel get hot. I am waiting at least 1 minute between shots. Thursday I go to a 300 yard range. Hope I can stay on the paper. Loving this gun.

Shot at 300 yards today. Could only hold 2 MOA! I will keep working on it. I am changing from Varget to H4895 and 180 grn Nosler BT's for my next range trip. Still loving this rifle. At 18 pounds, recoil is just not an issue.

I have always said that even if you cant make a silk purse out of a pigs ear at least you can make a good pigskin wallet. You are well on the way.

Made it to my first 600 yard shoot today with my silk purse project. I had a blast. Shooting 25 rounds I was never outside the 8 ring and I even had a few 10's and one X. Recognize we are talking a 6" X ring (NRA High Power) not the 3" F Class X ring. But that is okay, I had fun and I hit the paper :) Everyone was really nice and helped me out a lot. I did not install a long range scope base so I was right at the upper end of elevation. I now have a 20 MOA base which I will put on before next week's shoot. My load was 30-06, 46 grns of H4895, 180 grn Sierra Game King Boat Tail seated on the lands, and a velocity of 2488 fps average. This is a 22" pencil barrel and it gets very hot. My 20 power scope was more than adequate. Manning the pits was a lot of fun also. I am hooked; I just need money!
