Thought some of you might enjoy my latest project modifying a new $300 Rem 700 30-06 ADL for 600 - 1000 yard shooting. I shot it this morning at 100 yards, cleaning after every round to break in the barrel. The rifle started out as a 7 1/2 pound Dale Earnhart Signature ADL, circa 2007 with a pencil thin barrel in a synthetic stock. I filled every nook and cranny of the stock with lead shot and epoxy, I bedded in the action, and epoxyed on a 1 inch thick by 2 1/2" wide Oak plank under the forend to tie the forend to the action and give a good level seat for the rifle on the front bag. The barrel is fully touching all of the forend, I made no attempt to float the barrel. The weight came out to 18 pounds. I loaded up 44 grns of Varget behind 165 grn Nosler BT's (recommeded by Nosler as an accurate load) and commenced firing. By the end of the 50 shot breakin (1 minute between shots), I was getting 1" groups. I am seating the bullets at 0 jump, which barely gives me .3" of seating in the neck. I am very pleased with my minimal investment. The recoil is very tolerable at this heavy weight. I have a lot of reloading experimentation to go to try and tighten my groups. I have my first chance at a 600 yard range shoot next week and I am hoping I can at least see some 6" groups. This fall I will be putting on a custom heavy Parma barrel and having the action trued. I hope to keep my total investment under 1200 dollars, cause that is all I can afford! Lots of fun.
