Just wanted so opinions on twist rate for this bullet 1 in 8" or 1 in 10"

Thanks for the info,

Nick

Nick,
I think you would definitely get a better answer on the 1,000 yd forum here. Most of these posts are about 100-300 yd benchrest. You might get a few answers, but there is a great wealth of knowledge on the 1,000 yd link.
good luck.

I just built a 338 Lapua last year to shoot that exact bullet. I used 1 in 10 Kreiger and could not be any happier with the results. It shoots less than an inch at 300 yds.

So there isn't really anything to gain by the faster twist?

Nick,
I have fired many rounds using 300gr SMKs over 4 yrs of registered 1000yd BR competition. You definitely don't need an 8 twist... it's too fast. A 10" twist works just fine.
I know a couple of friends that have shot that bullet in slower twists than 10 also. I believe one has even gone as slow as a 13" twist. But I wouldn't recommend pushing the envelope that far if your not willing to accept failure as a possible result.
A 10 twist is the good conservative choice that you really can't go wrong with. I'll guarantee a 10" twist will take you as far as you want to go.

Thank for all the info Guys. Now all I have to do is decide what brand of barrel to use.

I going back and forth between Bartlien and Shillen. Since it's going to fire a 338-378 weatherby mag I want the finished lenght to be atleast 32 inches for the barrel.

Nick,
You will have to double check but I believe Shilen doesn't process barrel blanks that will finish to 32" in length.

What action are you putting this barrel on? That somewhat dictates the barrel diameter also. If your gunsmith is a known "long range" gunsmith.. get with him and he will be able to guide you through these finer details. If you are using a local gunsmith that may not have a lot of experience in dealing with a lot of these "one off" issues that long range rifles demand, I would recommend calling Bartlein and Shilen and tell them what you are looking for and they will obviously tell you if they can or can not produce it.
Both of those barrel makers have excellent reputations, it's just a matter of can they produce the finished product to your prescribed finished dimensions and given action.

Good luck with you new toy. Watching 300gr bullets impact and seeing clumps of sod get thrown up in the air at 1000yds is rather amusing! Have fun.

The gunsmith I am using is precision barrel works in Hempstead Texas. Pete built my last rifle a 300 ultra mag. He knows his stuff when it comes to target rifles. The action I'm using is a Stiller precision tac338. I'm looking at a heavy palma type barrel contour. I would like it to be longer then 32 but as we all know what we want and what we get are usually 2 diffrent things LOL.

I haven't talked to Pete about the barrel yet but it's on my list of things to do. Everything I red about the 338-378 says it can use a long barrel. I want to be able to squeeze ever bit of juice out of the round.

I was originally thinking about using the 408 chey-tac but there aren't many sources for it. And even then it's too pricy.
