shoulder angles on cases

i saw that back in the 70s a person named drummond used a shoulder angle of 60 degrees on his improved weatherby cases on the guns he had built.used them in the 1000 yard benchrest matches at williamsport pa.this aloowed no case lengtheing i undestand .any thoughts on this iwas told that this angle would increase bolt thrust on fireing.

Bolt thrust. Never worried about it. It's there. Pressure in somewhat of a cylinder, regardless of shape, exerts equal force on all surfaces. Now we can discuss surface finish and lubrication on the chamber walls. I am more concerned with sizing dies working properly. My experience has been that much past 30 degrees issues can creep in during the sizing process. Instead of massaging the entire case you are shortening, collapsing the sidewalls to set the shoulder back.

People in my Dad's generation (I've heard it from at least 4) absolutely BELIEVED that steeper shoulders kicked more. I never understood that level of ignorance. Yeahh, a Win Mag kicked more than a H&H Mag, yeahh a Weatherby kicked even more.....and a 308 kicks harder than a t'urdy-t'urdy...... but REALLY??

toadally weird.

BTW about the hatefullest kickenest thing in my young teen life was Dad's pre-64 M94 w/180gr Silvertips. I HATED that pig! An hour before daylite, 26 below zero and gusting snow chrystals and vivid instructions to NOT MOVE! Not one MUSCLE! Until it came time to bring 'er up and raise a bulging red/white and blue weal on my facebone..... Had to make that first shot count cuz I couldn't see good after that.

I saw a guy having a stroke once..... it looked like he'd just fired that 30-30 and was gearing up to give 'er another.....
