Shot My First World Class Air Rifle Today

WOW, what a blast.

A local FT club was having an event today so I emailed them about checking out their rifles and shooting a little. The club pres let me shoot his tricked out RN10 off my Farley Compact rest and bag set up.

I took some Rimfire BR targets I got from Bob Collins and I was very pleased with the 237-5x I fired on the first [ and only ] target I shot at 25 yds. I did have one 7 [ in a row of 10's ]that I really didn't see in the flags but it was all windage so maybe I missed a zephyr.

The FT guys really got into shooting over flags so maybe I can convert some of them.

I also may be getting a hook up on an unlimited class Annie 2002. Any insights on these rifles?

Glad you had a good time, you might have a tough time converting us over to BR but we have no problem with you trying, LOL.

That rest of yours was very nice, I guess when you spend all your time position shooting you miss out on cool gadgets like that.

Just a little more info on the anschutz 2002, I'm not sure who modified Robert's but from my personal expirience with my aluminum stocked Alan Z modified 2002, it's probably the most accurate airgun I have shot since I got into airguns.

Mine shot Crosman Heavies (10.5 grain) at 900 FPS for about 55-60 shots on a 70 degree day. In warmer temps I would get about 5-10 more shots. Mine had a Alan Z shroud in it and it was gnat fart quiet, great for back yard practice.

Robert's rifle would be better suited to your needs since it has a BR-50 stock on it, though it still may be a little awkward with your rest set-up. If you chosse to get something else, let me stress to you that getting a regulated gun would probably help your scores quite a bit since your pellet velocity will essentially be identical for every shot, some may disagree with me but I struggled quite a bit in FT with unregulated guns.

As you saw today My Daystate CRX is also a very good regulated gun too, I only missed 2 sitting targets and you saw what kind of distances we were shooting at today.

I'm not sure what your budget is but there are alot of great guns from the late 90's and early 00's that can be had for half the money they cost new, and most I have seen are very well cared for. Like I said earlier today, I think the way to go is either a theoben MFR, or a Theoben S-type. They produce and awesome amount of very well regulated shots with really good to outstanding accuracy.

I hope you get a Georgia Chapter of airgun BR off the ground, it's a good option to the growing ammo costs lately. If you need a place to get tanks filled there is an airgun friendly place up here in Oakwood that can fill to 6,500 PSI.

I had a great time today visiting with you guys and spectating at my first FT match, thanks for the great hospitality you all showed.

I talked to Robert and he is going to bring the 2002 to the next FT match so you should see me there. He said he had it out today getting it dialed in. It does have a shroud and is very quiet.

I'm the guy who runs the AGBR matches up here in New Hampshire, and arguably might be the guy who got this whole shooting airguns from the bench thing back into motion. Where I too was new to airgunning I gave AZ a call and asked him what he would recommend, then, upon his recommendation, had him build me a Theoben MFR with all the fix'n's over last winter.

Then, I had Gary Lemons build a stock for it since the factory one just didn't cut it, the same as in rimfire, and, where Gary had also gotten bitten by the bug, he had gone out and designed a stock specifically for the Theoben MFR's. plus is capable of finishing it to whatever level you want to take it to.

I did have a problem with mine from the get-go, no fault of AZ's. But, once I figured out where the problem was (burrs around the air porting into the barrel) and after about an hours fix, the gun is absolutely, flat out awesome. At the beginning of this month I shot a 250-5X indoor score (look under the post of confirmed world records) and then in practice two weekends ago while using a target similar to a downsized IR 50/50 target, shot a 250-17X (which would convert over to another 250-5X AGBR score). Yupp, this gun is a shooter!

Good luck with your new adventure. But, be forewarned, if you thought rimfire was addictive, you aint seen noth'n yet!

That's exactly what several of us have done. I sold my #1 Heavy gun, plus several other pieces of excess gear, to help finance my Theoben project. Remember, when you're first starting out it's not just the gun that you're buying, but also, if it's a PCP you'll need a SCUBA or Carbon Fiber tank for recharging it, plus a new scope.

Once the ammo I have now is gone (probably sometime in 2010) I will have to re-evaluate whether to buy more, or to just sell off the rest of my rimfire equipment and switch over to shooting 100% airgun. With the way I'm feeling after my first full season of AGBR, my guess would be the latter of those choices. But, I enjoy being with the rimfire folks so much that I hate to think of breaking away from them, so for that reason alone may continue on shooting rimfire.

Here's the Steyr 91 I picked up Wed morning. Wed evening I set up my portable bench in the backyard and shot an 'eyeballed' 243-11x on the second target I tried. I say eyeballed because I don't yet have the proper 177 to 22 plug and it was on an RBA rimfire target.

The Steyr is a Co2 gun so I have a lot to learn about the care and use of Co2 guns. I mounted a 3" forend adaptor and modified some Kelbly rings to fit the Steyr sight base, 36x Weaver.
