Short chambering a Hunter class rifle

I have a new .308 reamer for my HBR rifle I'm working on, and I'm not quite sure how to cut the chamber .165" short.

Do I just put a 308 go gauge in and measure the gap between reciever and BBL? What do I measure it with?

The other thing I'm not sure about is how to cut my die, to resize for this.

Ben;
How can you cut a resizer with a chamber reamer???
The resizer needs to be smaller than the chamber at the shoulder/body intersection and at the web. If you run the reamer in short by .165 and then run the reamer in the die blank the same amount it will theoretically be the same size. To make a sizer you need a resize reamer designed to work with your chamber. Call your reamer maker and speak to him about this. It is possible to cut a seater with the chamber reamer.

Sorry, you misunderstood me. I already have a redding .308 die set and need to cut the resizer down, so it is .165 (plus undersize amount) shorter than the the parent case. This will be my resizer for this case.

This is what I was advised to do. I just don't know how to accurately remove the right amount of length off the die, so it resizes brass for my chamber.

Should I cut the die, build the brass, then cut the chamber to the brass, or cut the chamber and then machine the die carefully?

I would cut the 308 full length sizing die off .165" and run a piece of 300 Sav brass through it and use that for my go guage. Realize that a standard sizing die will probably give .002" or slightly greater clearance on a minimum chamber, so you might want to chamber .002" deeper than minimum on your brass.

Ben, I have done several of these in other calibers. I always make the case first for a go gauge like riflemeister said. You can also use this case for a depth gauge when reaming. Just make sure you have enough relief on the sides and all the swarf blowed out so you get a true reading with the case. You will do the final fitting of the cases with the full length die for a crush fit. Just my .02 wrth Kenny

OK, thanks guys, but, why use a 300 savage case instead of .308?
