Shooting Stool

I am in need of opinions on the purchase of a good shooting stool. I have never had one and figure it's about time. I have looked at Sinclair's stool at $105 and it looks pretty good. I have also looked at Drummer thrones namely Roc/Soc and Gilbralter both in the $130 to $160 range (with the adjustable cylinder). I shoot a mixture of 100 yard benchrest, 600 yard matches and also some varmint shoots. I would appreciate any thoughts on the pros and cons of the various types available.

The hydraulic style like you mention from Sinclair is a PIA to carry but I still would not use anything else. You can change your height by simply lifting up on the lever and sliding up or down. I refused to use one but my wife wanted it so I bought it for Christmas but when she quit shooting I decided to use it (had already spent the money) and I will never go back.

How durable are they? A lot of gas lifter office chairs seem to drop their load at inconvenient times.

I bought a Tama drummer throne from a musician supply store online for about $40 plus shipping. Works great and can be disassembled into smaller parts for transport.
 
check used musical equipment...
i bought my drummers throne/now shooting stool for 35 bucks and its great.
adjustable height/adjustable leg spread, and if you leave the seat/throne just a bit looose..it rotates......

Sinclair hands down! My seat finally wore out on mine and the only thing left was the metal disk and a little disk of rubber still molded to it so I picked up a Drummer's stool thinking it would be the Cat's Meow and other than being able to conveniently fold it and break it down into smaller pieces for transport it was not a good decision on my behalf. In other words I don't like it and can't justify picking up another Sinclair dog gone it.

Yep. I bought mine from Sinclair when they first came out...same price back then. It is just begining to get a little soft on the air pressure, and the seat material seems to be getting hard like it is getting close to breaking down. When it does, I'll buy another just like it.

do not buy a cheap drumme'rs throne.
i bought a "better" quality used throne. its heavier....meatier..as its gonna last a while and will easily handle my 200 lbs and i paid less than the new price of a cheap one.
i bought a bar stool round top, not a profiled seat shape.
the top come off and the legs fold..so compact easy traveling....

My Sinclair is going on seven years and except for the inevitable scuff marks still works like new. Compared to the cost of some of our other components, this item is a bargain.

Call Jim Kelbly. They have 60 Sinclair stools. And they do come apart.
I bought a drummer stool. 4 yrs old. It's about gone. 3-4 various repairs.
Tried the Sinclair stool at Kelbly's. They are great.
 
My buddy has a Sinclair that's about 14 years old now and still working (although he doesn't use it much anymore). Sinclair's had two generations of their stool and the first was better. The second gen has a softer seat (easier to tear) and the base diameter has increased. I find myself tripping over the legs more now than the old one. Stools seem to be the one thing that is hard to squeeze in a fully loaded vehicle because of their weird shape. That's where the thrones are nice.

Lime Green,,, John, I have owned one for many years (when the spread width of the feet were much smaller than the stool Sinclair offers today) I used it @ 12 to 17 matches yearly. I keep it in the trunk of my car in case I need it. I can't afford the BR game anymore, but I use my stool @ least once weekly. If the new stools are as good as this stool has been,, I think you'll be more than satisfied.

Lime Green,,,, One more opinion,,, The drummes stools (I also have one) are easier to pack for traveling, but the P-new-matic stools are much easier to ajust.

or HFV have the best of both worlds and get the p-new-matic or hydraulic drummers throne.
 
Thanks for all the great suggestions very much appreciated as I continue to evaluate the various stools available. Someone informed me that Great Scott Shooters has a shooting stool very similar to the Sinclair stool i.e., 5 legs and cylinder adjustable.
