The 3 that I had needed about .005-.008 cut on the front ring and a minimal straightening of the threads in the front ring for the barrel tenon.

Ugh! You'd think a "custom" action wouldn't need any lathe work. Alas, that is not the case. And from what I've heard, Shilen isn't the only one...

DGA's were built back in the day with multiple setups. Some of the modern custom actions (like Borden or Kelbly to name a couple) are mfd on machining centers which are capable of things unheard of in the time DGA's were made plus they're designed and built such that they END UP straight which is a far cry from being manufactured straight only to relax to crookedy after all the necessary cuts and reliefs are milled in. The knowledge that goes into making an action end up straight bends my mind.
