A little history ,In 2003 Bill Calfee install a 4 groove shilen ratchet for me on one of my turbo. An taper lapped the barrel . This was in response to a suhl that Bill Myers had built a year or two before for Fred Sear, Mr. Sear was winning alot of matchs with it and we were shooting the same places .These two rifle acount for more than 325 hall of fame points in IR50 /50 . What does all of this mean.Well the new Shilen is just a old trick from Mr.CALFEE and Mr. Myers Both men are looking for better barrels at this time and remember this was over six years ago. Who will find the next super barrel ? Well I am testing maybe one today ,GONE to the range. P.S. Stand on the track long enough and you will get ran over. KEITH LOVAN

Keith,

What a reasonable take on things, that progress is the cumulative effect of many small improvements.

Thanks for bringing us back to an even keel.

Always looking for the next great product. Can't blame them, but in the time that I have been shooting, no rimfire barrel has maintained it's dominance very long. Will that happen to Shilen?

Keith

the Hall I shot for the last few years had a fluted Shilen ratchet (Time take off). Bill Myers put it on for me... It averaged 249 in 13.5# class in 50/50 SOTY for 2 years. With blue box Eley. As you know I sold out and quit shooting. but I understand the gun set a new indoor world record. 250-24X.....if that's correct?
It also won me several HOF points.. If I were to do it again it would be a Shilen!!!!!! Bill

A bit off topic perhaps, but has nobody ever shot a 25X?I find that hard to believe.Yesterday I shot a 250 20X indoor with a factory standard barreled Anschütz 1913(BR50 card).I must say that's my best so far.

I thought al those top custom guns were one holers?

Probably because they shoot outdoors. How do you shoot X's on a BR 50 card, no are no dots in the center on a BR 50 target?

Using a BR-50 card as an example is a little confusing. What is a 250? Worst or best edge? And like James says, what do you count as an X?

"but I understand the gun set a new indoor world record. 250-24X.....if that's correct? "

So he was talking about indoor Mr. Pappas.

The official cards we use in Belgium are called BR50 Krüger No. 5136 B.
You can see them here: http://krueger-targets.com/sch_en_articles.php?VID=5ftmu3IahsGUFqCZ&saSearch[category]=Benchrest

10 is about 6,3mm and X is a very small circle.
If you gauge and it touches the line it counts,X doesn't have to be gone completely.Or is this the case in the US?

I think the target you are referring to was shot at the RBA National by Joe Oats who is 11 years old. Most of the matches are held outdoors. There are a few indoor winter ranges along the east coast. Not many around the country. I would say 90% or more of the matches are shot out doors. I assumed you were talking about outdoors. WE have not shot BR-50 since 1998. There was no x count on a BR -50 target. The ARA target has a dot in the center but is not scored an X. The PSL target has a dot that is scored a 100 if you touch and a X if you take it out. The IR 50/50 has a dot that is scored a X if you touch it. I don't think anyone has ever shot a 25X but I might be wrong.

pffff so many targets....confusing.the ones we use do have an X,but maybe they are still different from the US BR50 cards.

I always shoot indoor, there is no outdoor range here except a military we can use on sundays. But that is dusty(sand everywhere),has no sheltered roof nor any benches.Maybe by the end of the year I can shoot outdoor, our range is expanding. That will be a whole new episode in the story:)Can't wait to give it a try.

Pieter, given your dimension, this would be pretty close to our IR50/50 target. Worst edge scoring, if touching line you get higher value with protest allowed and 3 referee review.

I've taken a further look at all the cards and indeed it resembles that target a lot.If you touch the higher ring in score it counts as the higher. This is the case too in IR 50/50 I suppose then.

Had a chance to see Keith Lovans "Super Barrel " in action. Went to the range tue. for some tuner work and Keith shows up. After setting up his target and wind flags, he pulled the Calfee turbo with the "Super Barrel" from the case and shot a one hole with the first three shots. Now I don't know what constitutes a "Super Barrel" but that three shot group was at the worst a .1 and best .0 he went ahead to shoot a 250/17xs. With Two different lot #s
