shell holder for 7x57 rws brass

Hi guys, I have some RWS brass and my shell holder#2 does not fit. Does anyone know of a shell holder that will fit, or a custom one made for such a problem like this. My 6.5x57 RWS brass goes right in, but would prefer to use 7x57 brass for 6 Remington Imp. If custom shell holder is not available, can a standard #2 shell holder be modified. I do not have acess to a lathe to turn the cases, and that doesn't seem like a reasonable alternative. Thanks, Waverly
 
You're probably going to have to have one ground down. The extractor groove is so shallow, the shellholder hits on the front of the groove -- as I'm sure you know by your post.

Best to check the action, too. With a BAT, for example, you'll need to do a bit or work on the extractor, or have a custom one made. A Savage will pick up the RWS 7x57 case, & a 700 (or 40-X) probably will too, but any action with a slightly thick extractor won't.

The RWS 7x57 brass is nice, but does have this problem. As you probably know, the 6.5x67 has a shorter neck; parent for it was the 8x57. And now we've been told there will be no more RWS brass, period.

FWIW, I believe some people are reporting good success with Winchester .257+P Roberts brass. The boxed Winchester was reported to be quite good.
 
Easy fix

I had the exact same problem a couple of months ago. I got a bunch of the close-out 7x57 RWS from Natchez. Take a rotary tool (like a Dermil) and put the sanding drum on. You only need to take off about 5 thousands from the inner diameter. Works like a charm. I had not problems with my Rem 700 or Savages exacting the RWS. And it is sweet brass. I made 6mm Rem and 6mm Rem AI tight neck out of 200 pieces.

I just looked up my old Sierra book (50th Anniversary edition). RCBS is the only supplier with a different call for the 7x57 compared to the standard .308 head size.

The standard head uses the #3 & 7x57 either 11 or 3, so they must have recognised that there are variations in head dimensions. The #11 fits the .225 Winchester & .220 Swift also.
 
FWIW, I used the shellholder for a .220 Swift. It was close, but still made a small ding on the front of the extractor groove in the case. While it did work, the Dremel solution sounds better.

Sorry, I should have explained my thinking. If the case is "supported" by the extractor groove, there is no reason to believe it will be true in the die. The resizing press/die/case alignment assumes the base of the shell holder is true to the ram, the top of the shellholder is true to the bottom, as is the cutout where the case is inserted. It also assumes the case only touches the shellholder at the bottom (which is one of the "true" points). There is no reason to assume that the sides of the shellholder are true, or more significantly, that the extractor groove in the case is perfect with respect to the base of the case. FWIW
