Mr. Wright

Thanks you for your message.

I will consult with Paul Schmid about your friend's request.

I think I will need info on the front bag measurements, and maybe a photo showing how he shoots his HG.... I mean his position/setup?

Will ask Paul to contact you and explain the technical problem & options. You know my english is not good, lol.

Btw, when is the "late summer"?

Seb,

The rifle is just a very large benchrest rifle. It is shot just like a normal BR rifle off a bench that is about 32" high.

The front bag is a special one that Bald Eagle made up for the 6" wide fore end. It looks just like other bags except it takes a 6" wide fore end. I can get dimensions.

Late summer would be in August or September, latest. (This year.)

Have Paul call me. This is a serious request. My friend has decided that his life will not be complete without a coax front rest.

Thanks,

Dick Wright

P.S. If you have Precision Shooting magazines for ten or twelve years ago, there is a whole series of articles about this gun and how we shoot it.

Yup...

It's the "Fist of God" gun. Mike decided that he needs a coax rest for that big mutha.

The problem is most coax rests are made for 10-1/2 and 13-1/2 lb. guns. the gun weighs 43 lbs. and there's 25 lbs. on the front bag. Mike and I weighed it last fall.

Mr. Wright,

Some questions here...

At what date you would be in Kelbly's range?...I will be there on May 18 in the morning, btw.

Can you arrange to bring the rifle there, or just other rifle with similar weight & fore end width?

If so, I can probably prepare 6" wide front bag and we can try to shoot the rifle with my rest, just the day before the SS, or in the afternoon after the match?
It would be just the standard rest, and I would only need to modify the rest top a bit. (just like what I did in Brisbane last 2006 when I shoot for the "500m fly shoot" using Stuart Elliot's Heavy Gun 55 lbs...his HG also has 6" fore end).
Maybe we can get ideas etc from this experiment and then find better solutions?
Well, I might need to know the width of the buttstock too, and prepare the rear bag.

I will attach a photo here for you for your reference....

You can see the "modifications" in the photo...I only removed the side tension plates of the rest top and put an alumunium plate onto the existing base top. (personally I don't think side tension is needed for a heavy gun with extra wide foreend...but I might be wrong!).
I covered the additonal alum plate with tapes (just to avoid marr).
Also use the joystick so that the rest top and the joystick move in the opposite direction. (joystick up - reticle moves down, joystick to the right- reticle to the left, etc).
It work for me, and I prefer to use my rest that way. (it's less effort to operate the stick, just like playing billiard...you are able to operate the joystick just with one or two fingers even there's heavy weight on the rest top).

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the tension screws were just set in "normal" setting. I still had to hold the joystick, of course. (reason: it's hard/sticky to move the joystick if I set the tension tightly).

Paul & I discussing about to use counter balanced weight to compensate the weight of the rifle.....we would probably need some experiments to make one as to your expectation.
We consider this is an interesting project.

Sorry it took long to get back to you......seb.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I'll be there the afternoon of the 19th. We should have time to shoot the gun.
I will bring it or maybe talk Mike Stumpfig into bringing it down. I'll guarantee that this rifle will have killed more deer than any gun there. (In the hands of Mrs. Stumpfig, of course.)

We won't need a rear rest. We have one that works great. We'll bring it.

We will probably need a longer than normal joystick just because the gun is so long.

Mike Stumpfig is a real good home-grown engineer. It would be best if he came down and talked directly to you anyway.

I'll check with Kelby's and make sure it's O.K. to shoot that thing. I wouldn't want to blow a hole in their berm.:)

It will draw a crowd after the first shot.

OK then, I will prepare the front bag, top plate, and a longer joystick.
If the rear bag is high(?), I would probably need to prepare longer elevation screws.

It should be great if Mr. Stumpfig can come.
Even if we cannot/not allowed to shoot that thing, we still can try to ride/steer it on the rest and then see what we can do....seb.

Mike is going to take pictures of his rifle and email them to you today. He can give you the height of the rear bag, etc.

I talked to Mike last night after he read this thread. He would like very much to come down to Kelbly's if he can. May is a very busy time for his business. If he can't make it, I'll bring the gun down and a little ammo.

You will hear from Mike soon.
