seating pellets straight in bore

As an old benchrest shooter of 40 years both center and rimfire, a smith for Shilen for 8 years and author of technical articals for accuracy magaziness I know how much a off center projectile setting in a throat affects accuracy.
( a student of both Mann and Vaughn) How is this accuracy problem addressed IN AIRGUNS.
And don't even begin to tell me it does not matter.

You start with a very carefully machined leade. I like a pellet to start easy and then "pop" in place. Make sure you dont nick the skirt with a fingernail during insertion.

load straight, shoot straight

I like a gun that allows direct manual insertion of the pellet. This allows one to start it straight in, and have a feel for the fit while pushing it home in with the thumb.

To see if you are creating damage while loading for some reason, load a pellet, than push it in an inch further with a q-tip or small stick, and now push it back out with a cleaning rod from the muzzle and examine it closely.

Pellets shoved in a bit cocked will have part of the skirt's leading edge burnished and deformed a bit, though this is also often caused by a poorly formed leade or badly done barrel transfer port.

Do about five as straight as you can, and compare with a few deliberately loaded a little sloppy and look at em for differences with a 10X loupe.

pellet seating

you can buy a pellet seating tool from BEEMAN'S

thanks

thanks for the info will check it out.............

leade angle for pellet guns

Don, what is the best lead angle for accuracy in pellet guns?

thanks, Frank

I don't know...what I have done and what I have seen done have all been stoned by hand. LD is much more likely to have a good answer for you. If he does not chime in, I'll give him a call and ask him what he thinks.

You guys got to be kidding me........

The leade angle on airguns is stoned in?
Has no one ever read FW Mann's book on "The bullets Flight" or Harold Vaughn's book titled "Rifle accuracy facts?" We have reamers now folks and lathes that turn in angles that are concentric to the bore. You know the thing proven in 1901 about bullets starting in the bore crooked do not straighten out, the exiting of the skirt not square from the muzzle affecting gyroscopic spin i. e. affecting group size. Come on guys say it isn't so. Please.
I sincerly believe benchrest is really going to change this sport. In 1977 if a rimfire shooter could shoot a 3/4 inch group at 50 yds he won a match. Now meaning today if a rimfire benchrest shooter cannot shoot a group of 1/8 inch he will not win. The difference was gun and bullet technology brought into the sport by centerfire benchrest shooters. It dramatically changed Rimfire so hang on boys and pay attention this is going to be a real ride.

The grooves in an AG barrel are much less than in a RF barrel. The head of the pellet is sized for the lands and is not engraved much at all. The skirt of the pellet blows open into the grooves. It's a little different than the powder burners and all you are doing is allowing the pellet to be seated without damage.
Edit to add: The stoneing is done in a lathe.

Its now clear that ignorant and poorly-read airgunners like me are gonna WAIT for you to show us how to build accurate target guns. I don't expect to see YOU shooting an airgun I had something to do with, me being so backward an all.'

Don't be hard on poor Don, he was referrin to a airgun I had some hand in buildin, with a barrel I prepp'd, an i tole him how I did em. He jes don't know better cause his gun shoots ok for him (lucky is all, I guess).

Hanging on, jes waitin for further ellucidation ....

I really would like to see photo's and an explanation of just how that leade angle on airguns is stoned in.

Every time this subject comes up -it's all a big secret (in centerfire).

Charles Landis wrote about lapping in the leed with a specific bullet but that he failed when attempting this .

How do you this to an air gun barrel ?

Theres a faiir amount of info about thhis scattered about in older poosts here:

LD,
You are too generous with that link, however I doubt those that say they want the info will spend the time to find it. My feeling is if "old benchrest shooter of 40 years both center and rimfire" can't figure it out for themselves they don't need to know. I for one am not about to give up what took many hours of trail and error to get right. Only to be criticized for my method by some dip-sh*t who has had his BR rifles built for him and hasn't a clue what it takes to build one.
