Scoring Programs

I do not understand why the Match Directers do not use Doug Weeter's scoring programs. Once you get them set up it saves a great deal of time with match results. They are for ARA, IR50, and RBA with a branch off for 3 Gun, UL, state matches, ARA tournaments and also for ARA club champion. Email results are also included so you can send in match results with equipment lists. If I can use them anyone can. I'm sure Doug will help anyone if they have problems. He has always helped me.;):) Doug I hope I haven't over stepped my bounds with offering your help.;) Mickey

I reckon no one is interested in the scoring programs. :(

Mickey,
My only comment is that I use it at the match, and it is wonderful. Thanks Doug. But I bought a PC laptop to do results at the match and I use a Mac at home. The difference is I need more equipment at home to use the e-mail capabilities of the PC laptop and virus protection and worm protection and cross-eyed crazy protection from everything in this world directed at PC's just to provide match reports. I'm fine with providing match reports at my expense of some $800 for nothing else than that. I USPS my match reports because I trust the Postal Service more than I trust my PC. If I could have afforded a MacBook, there would be no problem. Say what you want, but my Mac has never been attacked, destroyed, even looked at by any virus, worm, bughole, or antyhing of the sort. Without any protection or any reminder every time I open the SOB up. Other than that, I use the program that Doug made for us and enjoy it. Thanks Doug and I agree Mickey, more match directors should use it, but most don't have $800 to do so.

Can you not save the file to a thumb drive and email it from your Mac? I'm really just asking as I don't know what's compatible with a Mac.

Thanks for replying Carp but I can't help you with a Mac. I know nothing about them. I bought a used Dell Laptop several years ago to use at Gene's Rimfire. It has Windows XP just like my desktop at home. I put all the results on a flash drive and print them out at the match, then take it home and finish out with emails and eqpt list. I also use an inverter off my truck at range because there is no electricity at Gene's. We use a generator on the night matches and my laptop works fine. I just thought it would help with results using the scoring programs. Thanks, Mickey

Wilbur and Mickey,
I have Windows Vista on a Dell Laptop purchased around April 1 of 2008. What a wonderful world.........Vista.........huh. Wilbur, have thought of a thumb drive because Macky and Polly suggested it. Need to, but added expense JUST FOR A MATCH REPORT. Say it helps with the sanctioning bodies........no help from anyone but the local match director for a match report for the shooters AND the sanctioning bodies, no matter your discipline. I've been to a few ranges that had nothing, but a pen and paper. I can be fine with that. It is troublesome to do the match director-thing and print results at the end of the match and hardly get a thank you. We want instant gratification, but not at any expense. I should charge for a printed copy of the match report at the end of a match.......let's see...........somewhere around $40 each to pay for the computer and printer and ink to do it. I'm being sour folks because the PC laptop is sour. Anyone want to buy it for around $600?

Vista is a memory hog Carp. It needs around 2GB to work properly. The way I look at it memory is cheap, but I use my computers everyday for several hours so I want them to work. Thumbdrives are even cheaper; you can probably find somebody giving them away as a promotion. Excel files should be compatible on the Mac and the PC.

You gotta love Mac users. They tend to think they can't be attacked. If they were in as wide use as PC's they would find out. Anyway, I've not used virus protection since I started using Vista the day it came out. No problems but it does like memory.

Poor Mac Owners

I have to sympathize with Carp!
He has this Great Mac and it will not send email. Of course I guess that is one of the downfalls of being a Mac owner along with the inability to run some of the better programs created for today’s computer user. Now I understand why Polly has so mush trouble keeping the ARA website up to date – too many ARA Mac owners!

Another question that comes to mind for Mac owners is why not use your Mac to score a Match instead of paying $150 dollars for a windows laptop?

Hi Doug,
We spoke on here some time back about my making an OpenOffice version of your program. Now I know nothing of Excel or OO macros but have a pretty decent aptitude. After seeing Mickey's post I decided it was time to take a look. I am familiar with basic spreadsheets. I loaded the scoring program onto my Linux system and spent about an hour last night looking at it, reading the comments in your code, trying to figure out what each segment does. It would seem to me it would need to look as much as possible like yours and definitely put out an email like yours such that Polly wouldn't know which system it came from.

Why would I want Excel? To be compatible with much of the world.

But I personally have no need for its expense other than the scoring program. I have dual boot on my laptop and Linux is much better than Vista. I do run OO on all four of my systems, Vista, XP and 2 Linux. OO reads all Excel files I receive except for your scoring program and that is because it has macros. Most results I get from other matches are just a plain excel spreadsheet. OO works on Windows, Linux and MAC. And it is free. Don't overcharge like microsoft. One other problem with OO is its database is not compatible with Microsoft.

I currently use a works DB for scoring originally created by Pat Yates from Lincoln (a wonderful lady) in the mid 90's for BR-50. I have modified it over the years to work with ARA. It prints out a scoring sheet that looks like the score sheets Polly provides. Since scores are computer printed in a larger font, it is eay to read and no errors from terrible handwriting. But it does require reading the scores and typing them in, a great advantage yours has. I have not converted it to OO DB because it would be better to convert to yours. Just need to take the plunge.

So anyhow I will try to spend a little time each day working on this. I enjoy the learning experience and keeps me out of the bars at night. I'm sure I might have some questions. Rich

Rich,
The ARA Program is pretty basic so my guess is that you could convert it (re write) to open office. The big problem will be the sorting for ties. The rest is pretty basic spreadsheet. Give it a shot and I will help in any way I can.
Doug

Send me an email and I will help you get started.

PS I just downloaded Open Office. It will Score an ARA Match it looks like all the major scoring features work.

Speaking of ties....the other night, Joe and I both shot 2450 on a target. We both missed on the same bull. We waited for the program to decide who had high card but it's still thinking. 8>)

Read the Rule Book on breaking Ties then Read the Instructions for the Scoring Program then you might see it is waiting for you to do something  or it has already desided! :)

Don, Doug, we don't have ties here at ACGC. I start the bidding at $1 for an extra 25 points to the two shooters involved and we get it settled. Not sure what happens if we have two 2500's. Would Polly accept a 2525?

Doug,
I appreciate and commend you for your effort to help the disciplines with their scoring. I use your Excel format for my matches and tournaments. I think they are wonderful. I never complained about the stuff you provided. I was, I guess, just whining about the cost of a PC laptop and printer to provide the match results to the competitors. If you owned a Mac you might feel like myself. I don't think I could get a PC laptop and printer and the appropriate security to use the net for less than $800 yet today as prices go down. Don't forget that Microsoft Office was some $100 plus. It is wonderful to provide match results. It is just trying for the guy that just happens to not own a laptop of any kind to take to the match and is the match director.
