I am looking for a scope with 6.5-20x40mm and seeing as leupold doesnt make one i am wondering what other brands can handle the recoil of a 300win mag, vortex makes a 6.5-20x44mm but i have no information on vortex scopes reputation. something with target knobs or can have them installed would be an essential. any suggestions people?

suggestion: ask on 600/1000 yd forum or factory/hybrid forum, but don't ask on the short range benchrest forum where variable scopes are seldom if ever used.

I actually have a leupold 6.5-20x40mm with the varmint hunters reticle. I believe they also made a big game hunter reticle, but I am unsure of the variable power. Can't speak to the recoil challenge as it sits on my .223, but I don't see why it wouldn't. I have put about 1,000 rounds and it holds POI very well. You may want to check on the 1000yd or factory/hybrid forum and see if any of those guys can speak to the ability of leupolds to hold up to the recoil. There is a lot of experience with the big boomers over there. You may want to look into Burris, Nightforce, and sightron. Excellent scopes all.

oh wow, i have been all over the leupold website and they have no indication that they sell a 6.5-20x40 only 50mm's and thats all i've ever been able to find, maybe i'll just have to keep on looking, what model is yours? is it a vx-III?

Leupold 6.5X20

Had one on a 300 Win. Mag. for several years. Put quite a few hundred rounds thru it. No scope problems.

Leupold model # 62160 is the 6.5x20 with 40mm objective and standard "fine Duplex" Nice scope I have several. Finger adjustable (about time) don't have to use a coin anymore. Leupold guarantees all their scopes magnum proof.

but don't ask on the short range benchrest forum where variable scopes are seldom if ever used.

Actually Mike, not to be argumentative but the 12/42BR Nightforce is very popular in IBS Varmint for score class. But I agree its not very popular due to its weight in Short range Group shooting, in fact it is almost impossible to use it in a 10.5lb rifle.
