Scope shade why...???

I have noticed that many rimfire shooters have scope shades screwed onto their scopes....
In centerfire benchrest that has been a "no-no" for as long as I can remember...Am I missing something...

In centerfire the early shades like the Saunders went to the muzzle and it was determined a better solution to heat rising from the bbl was a heat shield on the bbl. Rimfire guys that use them do so to either add a bit of weight [most guns seem to be light] or to actually cut a bit of flare off the objective lens.

It is helpful in the fall shooting a range that faces south to keep glare off the front of the scope. I just leave mine on all the time. Mine is only 4 inches long, so in the fall I put a rolled up sheet of flat black construction paper on it for additional shading.

muzzle blast

The muzzle blast from a neighbors centerfire, against the extra surface of the Saunders shade, will cause a significant "miss" when doubling. Not a concern at a rimfire match.

Wilburs right and also, centerfire barrels get A LOT warmer and it can actually heat the air inside of the shade or tube and cause even more mirage than without anything.

This is also a big no no in rimfire also.. Alot of people use them and they are going to do as they like.. But anytime that you can trap heat or mirage that is caused by heat and not let it excape you will have trouble... There also are other downsides to them.. Just my opinion though.. Harry..:):):)
