Scope Ring Lapping Compound????

I ran out of grinding compound (a grit in heavy grease), that I bought specifically for lapping scope rings. Rather than mail order more, can I use something like automotive valve grinding compound or so other regularly available material? If so what grit do folks generally use?

try some wet autobody sandpaper in the 14-1500 grit or finer

I've used valve paste. Worked fine for me.
