Leupold and Nikon make excellent scopes that are good hunting scopes in the power range that are good for hunting. Leupold may have the edge in their warranty and warranty service. Even during hunting season their warranty/service turnaround is on the order of 2 or 3 weeks from your door back to your door too. I've never heard anyone complain about their warranty service, which is more than I can say for other scope makers. I've had several and still have four of them on various rifles.

I have no idea what Nikon's service is like, but they have a lifetime warranty too. The three I've got are excellent scopes, two Buckmaster 6-18's and a Monarch 3-12.

I'd also recommend no more than 9 or 10X maximum power for a variable. It won't help for any reasonable hunting range and the lower powers (2.5-3) are good for heavy cover. Higher powered scopes are larger, heavier, and cumbersome IMHO.

I like Burris and Nikon on the lowend. I have several Burris and they are hard to beat for the price. Some do not like the controls on the Burris, but the glass is excellent for the money.

Burris Fullfield II and Nikon Buckmasters lines.

3-9x40 is plenty for general hunting. I like the 4.5-14 for the magnum ranges. 6-18 or 6-24x is good for a varmint gun, but you can lose your quarry quickly with 6x. I prefer the 2-7x or 3-9x for a brush gun, say 100 yards or less.
