scope question

A friend showed me his Leupold 6.5x20 VarX-III and it is marked "Air rifle". Is it only the focus distances that make this an airgun scope? Is it OK to use on centerfire?
 
Air gun rated means they are heavier built in the lens mounting because of the double recoil of a springer airgun. It is fine for a centerfire.
